Gust Front - kicking the horses' ass

A second tome of Posleen series written by John Ringo. It deals with probing force of Posleen horde attacking the Earth - more precisely United States and the military response to it. This is certainly not a great literature - and it does not pretend to be such. On the other hand, Gust Front is a terrific piece of military science fiction/technothriller written by a soldier. The writing is clean and dry, with long description of military tactics and hardware. The story is presented through a wide array of characters – mostly military types with little characterization or character development. I must admit that I was at loss frequently at who is who – chapters are short and locations and characters are changing with a wild pace. The first part of the book deals with preparation to the upcoming invasion – story is slow and concentrates on issues of military units organization and backstabbing among military “Brass” on how the war should be conducted. In a typical way traditionalist believe that might of US Army is enough to crush the invaders even if they sport superior technology. It is a really cool aspect of the story – how the military reacts to the new type of threats and repeats the blunders that occurred each time in the history when more progressive force was attacking one with traditional attitude. Here the military problem is bit ironic – Posleens are masters of Blitzkrieg and Humanity cannot fight a mobile war against them – the proper “modern” response is to fight them using cities as fortresses and attitudes more akin to those presented by generals of World War I.
I felt a little bit tired by the pre invasion part – not too much though. Ringo took a chance to talk a little bit about societal changes imposed by the external threat and I really enjoyed short excursion of the main character cpt. Michel O'Neal to the Florida. Still I have never been to military so the descriptions of problems within military structure left me somewhat confused.
Then the invasion starts and action accelerates to a neck-breaking pace. This part is pure carnage – descriptions of heroic fight, amazing acts of cowardice, sacrifice, stupidity. I have never participated in war and I hope I never have to, but strangely this fictional descriptions feel very real. It is a conflict shown through the eyes of the soldiers – those fully aware that they have to sacrifice their life to protect their homeland. At times touching, at times infuriating. Still – it did not left me indifferent.
I wish there was, perhaps, more character development and more Posleen side of view. Still – characters die like flies, so it feels somewhat fitting.
There are some things that I feel are sub-par – Ringo lays pipe for the future books and hints at secret plots within Federation that on the face of it, supports Humankind. It piques my interest but it never develops in something more than hints. Also, there are some ridiculously unbelievable moments – mainly having to do with 8 year old commando girl Cally. Still, given that in the future she will become master assassin, perhaps it is understandable.
Finally – book is not really ending with a cliffhanger – there will be full scale invasion but main characters stories are for now resolved. I cannot imagine though not picking another tome of Posleen series in the future. I am sucker for military SF. At risk of sounding obvious if you are not into this sort of the things you probably give Gust Front a wide berth. Otherwise “Let their yellow blood run cold...”

Here are my thoughts on couple of RPG materials that I have been reading recently:
GURPS: Espionage - I cannot recommend this book enough. GURPS indeed deserves it's reputation of having well researched materials in a form that can be used for gaming. This particular gem allows putting espionage, counterintelligence and different covert ops in your campaign. Not only it contains usual assortment of gadgets, character templates and such but also incredible amount of real histories of spy rings and operations. I love the section describing different espionage operations and the discussion how you can you can introduce espionage into different campaigns. Again, this being GURPS it is not something ready to play. But if you are willing to come up with scenarios of your own it is excellent!
GURPS: Cliffhangers - A very well written sourcebook full of ideas. Although written for GURPS it can be used for any other system. It contains a time line of thirties, a seizable geographical sections dealing with possible adventure ideas for a given country, there is of course an equipment table, templates of adventurers, chock-full of scenario seeds, a section on scenario design and creation of memorable villains and more. Altogether an excellent supplement for GM. It has characteristic GURPSy "dryness" - i.e. no fluff and no imposed ideas. It is a toolkit for people who want to develop their own ideas. Big thumbs up!
I wreszcie coś po polsku - doskonały dodatek wypuszczony przez wydawnictwo Gramel:
Sensacja i Przygoda - Pulpowy podręcznik, który przeczytałem po GURPS: Cliffhangers, tym razem do mechaniki Savage Worlds. Mam wrażenie, że jest luźniejszy, mniej w nim suchych informacji, więcej klimatu. W jakimś sensie oba te podręczniki się uzupełniają. Szczególnie przypadły mi do gustu sekcje dotyczące Polski, w szczególności wywiadu. Za spory plus uważam generator przygód. Z drugiej strony przeszkadzają literówki i drobne błędy (np w tabelce broni). Ogólnie nie ma się jednak co czepiać. Dobra pozycja i do tego po polsku!

Recenzja „Przez kraj ludzi, bogów i zwierząt”

Wydawnictwo Gramel ogłosiło w sierpniu konkurs na scenariusz do dodatku Sensacja i Przygoda. Mniej więcej w tym czasie odbył się finał konkursu Sensacyjno-Fabularnego. Tak mi się jakoś te konkursy pomieszały, że postanowiłem napisać scenariusz, w którym pojawiłaby się postać Ferdynanda Ossendowskiego.Zabrałem się więc za czytanie Wikipedii, i po serii artykułów począwszy na biografii pisarza, poprzez „krwawego barona” Ungern von Sternberga, Bogd Chana aż po bitwę pod Chałchyn Goł nabrałem przekonania, że zarówno Ossendowski, jak i Mongolia to fascynujące tematy warte, wnikliwszej uwagi. Z tym przekonaniem zabrałem się za najsłynniejszą książkę Ossendowskiego - „Przez kraj ludzi, bogów i zwierząt”.
Jest to krótka pozycja, licząca nieco ponad dwieście stron, którą pochłonąłem w przeciągu kilku dni. Pamiętnik ucieczki z ogarniętej wojną domową Rosji jest napisany w prostym, reportażowym stylu. Z tekstu co rusz przebija nienawiść Ossendowskiego do komunistów, choć zważywszy na opisane tam okrucieństwa Armii Czerwonej i „Czeka”, jest to zrozumiałe. Patriotyzm i duma Ossendowskiego z faktu, że jest Polakiem jest poruszająca i nieco staroświecka. Trudno mi sobie wyobrazić, kogoś, kto pisałby współcześnie w taki sposób.
Ossendowski jest przyrodnikiem – z zapałem i kunsztem opisuje przyrodę Syberii i Mongolskich stepów, zwyczaje napotkanych ludzi, ich wierzenia. W lekturze „Przez kraj ludzi, bogów i zwierząt” poruszył mnie szacunek autora do wierzeń ludów wschodu - szczególnie buddyzmu. Kontrastuje to szczególnie mocno z nienawiścią do komunizmu. Patrząc na tamte czasy zawsze spodziewałem się pewnej dozy wyniosłości z jaką Europejczycy patrzyli na „prymitywne” kultury wschodu. Do pewnego stopnia jest tak nawet teraz w naszej oświeconej i świadomej kulturowego relatywizmu epoce. Ossendowski jest jednak inny. W książce prezentuje się, jako osoba ciekawa zwyczajów i szanująca kulturę mongolskich koczowników. Nie jest jednak w żaden sposób nią zaślepiony. Od zachwytu nad architekturą, czy głęboką pobożnością przeskakuje do krytyki zabobonności i ciemnoty. Od wysławiania pracowitości i przemyślności mieszkańców Syberii do niechęci i pogardy wobec ukraińskich kolonistów. Od wychwalania wielkości kultury chińskiej poprzez wykpiwanie chińskich urzędników. Niewątpliwie jest to wytwór swoich czasów – książka, której autor nie przejmuje się polityczną poprawnością, czy obiektywizmem.
Czytelnik „Przez kraj ludzi, bogów i zwierząt” towarzyszy Ossendowskiemu w fascynującej podróży – przez wielkie połacie Azji – tajgę i góry Syberii, stepy Mongolii i wzgórza Tybetu. Spotkanie ze światem, który zniknął w otchłani czasu, zniszczony przez wojnę domową i komunizm. Świat w którym broń maszynowa i tętent kopyt miesza się z buddyjskimi klątwami. W którym nieuchronny postęp styka się z mitem. Wiele razy, czytając tę książkę zadawałem sobie pytanie – jak wiele z tej opowieści jest prawdą, a ile zmyśleniem. Niektóre z opowieści zrelacjonowanych przez Ossendowskiego brzmią nieprawdopodobnie, aż trudno w nie uwierzyć. Wszystkie są jednak ciekawe. Dlatego myślę, że warto spędzić trochę czasu nad lekturą „Przez kraj ludzi, bogów i zwierząt”. Jest tego warta.

A review of "Adventures" by Mike Resnick

Last week, while I was browsing through an excellent SFsignal webpage I happened to stumble upon a name of Mike Resnick. Few minutes later I was reading his bio on Wikipedia and remembering Kirinyaga and other short stories published in Nowa Fantastyka, years ago when I still subscribed it. I decided I will listen to some interviews with him and afterwards I set my eyes at his book called "Adventures" - a collection of stories about reverend doctor Lucifer Jones and his quest to build tabernacle of Saint Luke. It is a short book taking place in Africa in the 1920-1930 period that is sparse on description but rich in amusing dialogs between Lucifer and people he meets there. "Adventures" is a story about a con-man that somehow always menages to get the short end of the stick and falls on his back, yet always stands up, dusts him self and continuous trudging on through the hardships of life.
I was laughing hard several times while reading and if you want something light, say while traveling, I am sure this book will be worth your time. If you like Terry Prattchet "Discworld" or even better "Three men in the boat" be Jerome K. Jerome - you should give Lucifer Jones a try. See a world through eyes of a man of the cloth (and all this) that tries to convert "godless heathens" in the Dark Continent.

Książka kontynuująca temat warsztatu Mistrza Gry, poświęcona tym razem różnego rodzaju sztuczkom, jakie można zastosować przy stole: dekoracji, muzyce, gadżetom, mapom, listom, itp. Jest to treściwa pozycja, napisana jednak z werwą i miłością tematu. Przyznam, że choć sam uważam się z fanatyka RPG, który poświęca im więcej czasu, niż jest to rozsądne, kilka razy zbierałem szczękę z ziemi, czytając o wcielonych w życie pomysłach Trzewika.
Tak jak i w przypadku poprzednich pozycji z serii „Graj ...“, czyta się tą książkę szybko i, przynajmniej w moim wypadku, z wielką przyjemnością. Zamierzam zastosować wiele z pomysłów tutaj zawartych na własnych sesjach - zarówno gadżetów, takich jak obrus, gra światłem, aż po karteczki ze snami, czy wydarzeniami. Dużo jest tego i podobnie jak w przypadku poprzednich części szybko ulatniają się z głowy. Zaletą „Graj z ...“ jest to, że można je przekartkować przed sesją, ot tak - dla inspiracji.
Chciałbym polecić tę książkę innym RPG-owym pasjonatom, którzy tę rozrywkę traktują poważnie. Z pewnością nie jest konieczna wszystkim MG, ale tym, którzy żyją medium gier fabularnych, z pewnością sprawi przyjemność.

Jennifer Morgue - a review

“Jennifer Morgue” is a loose follow up to the “Atrocity Archive” by Charlie Stross. The main protagonist, Bob Howard, is working for the “Laundry”. A British intelligence branch countering the occult and paranormal threats to the Crown (of mainly a tentacular origin). I loved the first book and I enjoyed this one. The story is entertaining, although it is a pastiche of James Bond flicks and as such it made me less immersed in the story. That is problem with me I guess – I like to believe that the story I read could happen and here I feel too much like author is blinking to me - “See how cleverly I play with the conventions?”. On the other hand, I admire the way Stross handles Cthulhu mythos – especially magic. As I am an avid Cthulhu roleplaying Game Master I am more than happy to steal his ideas of how magic works and what can be achieved with it.
“Jennifer Morgue” has interesting cast of characters, some romance and all around Open-source geekines. A perfect mix. My biggest gripe with the story comes from the fact that the author uses first person, present tense narration – the same as in his short story collection “Accelerando”. For some reason I find this type of narration harder to read than your typical third person, past tense. Over time I got used to this but the reading was a bit of a chore. Overall a worthy read, particularly if you are interested in thrillers, Lovecraft and British sense of humor.

The first one on "The psychopath test" by Jon Ronson:
An excellent read that introduces reader into the creepy world of psychopaths and more importantly research into what exactly is a nature of psychopathy. I cannot stress enough how approachable and interesting this book is. For a topic so disturbing, it has a remarkably light and entertaining, even funny tone. I think the author perhaps overindulges into describing his feelings and thoughts but what it looses in concrete it makes up in strength of the message. Yes, there are psychopaths among as and there is preciously little we can do to change them. On the other hand the psychiatry itself comes out as a science filled with traps. Well, the brain is a complicated thing indeed. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a real page turner and the subject is fascinating. Perhaps a little bit light on the content but fantastically well written and moving. I cannot wait to read some more works by Jon Ronson.

Książka, którą czyta się szybko i przyjemnie. Z drugiej strony jest dość płytka - składa się w zasadzie z kilku opowiadań - w zabawny i czasem przerażający sposób opisujący realia PRL. Mam wrażenie, że jest to pozycja skierowana bardziej do nastolatków, choć jako osoba, której dzieciństwo upłynęło w czasach opisywanych w książce, nie mogę się powstrzymać przed pewną rozrzewnieniem, które wpływa pozytywnie na odbiór książki. Podsumowując - jest to Pilipiuk znany z kronik Wędrowycza, bardziej niż z 2568 kroków. Z chęcią przeczytał bym kontynuację, ale wolałbym, żeby stanowiła jedna dłuższą i bardziej rozbudowaną historię.

Jacek Komuda "Starościc Jazłowiecki" - nie lubię klimatów polski szlacheckiej, ale Komuda świetnym pisarzem jest! Czyta się świetnie - szybka akcja, dobre dialogi i ciekawie zarysowane postaci. Potomek Samuela Zborowskiego zabija przypadkiem potomka możnowładcy, który o niczym nie wiedząc wynajmuje go, aby odnalazł marnotrawnego syna. Jest tu walka, są tajemnice przeszłości - słowem - czytać!

Maciej Musialik "Szyfrem do mnie mów" - kolejne odwiedziny w Nowej Moskwie - krótkie i zabawne.

Rafał K. Markowski "Supermarket twoich marzeń" - to chyba debiut. Nie przypadło mi do gustu, choć jest tam fajny pomysł ekonomiczny - kończąc 18 lat, każdy obywatel dostaje "Życie" - kredyt do wydania na resztę jego dni obliczony na podstawie statystycznej analizy wydajności pracy danej jednostki. Ludzie wydają ją na programy modyfikujące pamięć i zachowanie - jakby wspomnienia przyszłości, które sprawiają, że mogą je urzeczywistnić. Pomysł niezły, ale fabuła mnie nie poruszyła.

Kolejne dobra opowiadanie Dawida Juraszka - "Mroczna Bezdeń". Powoli wyrasta na mojego ulubionego polskiego autora krótkich form. Barbarzyńca w krainie przypominającej Tajlandię wybiera się z piękną piratką na poszukiwanie skarbów. Są motywy ktultystyczne, ciekawe opisy, wręcz czuję zapach morza. 5!

Ela Graf "Miłość ci wszystko wypaczy" - domyślam się, że to fragment większej całości. Utwór reprezentuje Urban Fantasy z Wampirami, Aniołami i Babilońskimii Bóstwami. Dobrze się czyta, ale nie lubię tego gatunku. Nie znudziło mnie, ale to nie moje klimaty.

Świetna Wyspa Petera Wattsa - budowniczy wrót podróżują z prędkością podświetlną przez kosmos. Z bram, które budują wychodzą istoty po osobliwości, które ich nie rozumieją. Tymczasem u celu kolejnej podróży żyją inteligentne kosmiczne meduzy - czy okażą się lepsze od ludzi, czy może zasady biologii pozostają niezmienne?
Adam Troy-Castro - "Arwy" - kolejne świetne opowiadanie. W tym świecie akt urodzenia oznacza prawną śmierć, tylko płody są "żywe" - modyfikacje genetyczne czy inne sprawiły, że są prawie nieśmiertelne, o ile mają nosiciela - "Arwę" - osobę której pozwolono się urodzić, a następnie przekształcono w bezwolnego nosiciela o wybranych z góry parametrach. Poruszające. Nie sposób przejść obok tego kawałka obojętnie.
Polska fantastyka to Zbigniew Wojnarowski z 'Bezsennością" - młody student występuje w filmie jako sumienie ludu wobec grzechów partii. Cenzura wycina jego scenę, więc wyrusza na jej poszukiwanie. Okazuje się, że w dziwny sposób trafia, jako duch, do alternatywnego świata w którym nie istnieje. Dobrze napisane, ale trochę zbyt artystyczne.

A little hidden gems

This weekend I had a pleasure of watching two surprisingly entertaining movies that seem to have fallen below the radar. I wanted some silly, brainless entertainment, after a previous weeks when I have seen “The wrestler” and “The reader”. These two were excellent, thought provoking dramas that moved me and made me shed a tear or two. Now I was hoping to see something so awful as to be entertaining to recuperate after seeing all this ambitious cinema. My wife picked two promising titles - “Black death” and “Pandorum”. The first deals with a group of warriors send by a bishop to a remote village somewhere in swamps of England that is said to be spared of ravages of bubonic plague. From a trailer I expected a gory, action packed movie with monsters, zombies and such. Instead, I was watching a fairly plausible story of men trying to make sense of the plague in the only terms that possibly could – the religion. “Black death” is a well made low budget movie. The actors are not major stars, with exception of Sean Bean, who is anyway playing a side character. Still, it was thought provoking story, with great combat scenes, costumes and a plausible “medieval” feel to it. It reminded me of “13th warrior” crossed with “Wicker Man” with a dash of “Pillars of Earth”. Big thumbs up!

Second movie I have watched this weekend was “Pandorum”. I liked it because it delivered precisely what it promised – a horror and science fiction story with interesting characters, entertaining plot and astounding visuals. While there was no sense of a particular depth or moral ambiguity that was to be found in “Black death”, “Pandorum” was pure fun. The best part was the starship - “Elysium”. It was both majestic a dreadful at the same time. As it turns out, the visuals were created the old school way – by building a set, and monsters were guys wearing elaborate rubber suits. Not so much CGI as you see in most of the movies this days. It made for quite “realistic” feel. I think that this movie is a mixture of Alien, Pitch Black and to some extent reminiscent of Alastair Reynolds' Chasm City – with similar motif of colony ship lost in deepness of space.
I really have hard time finding any complaints about this one. Sure it is no “District 9” but it was a great science fiction show nevertheless. And the ending – call me a sucker but I loved it. I would say that only fault is that it is not very original. Well, if I can enjoy playing nth reiteration of Quake or Call of Duty I cannot see why I should complain about a robust movie. So if you like science fiction you should have fun with this one.

Deep fried potato sticks

Let's say, you have some mashed potatoes from a day before. You have to admit, they are not so tasty after reheating. There is a way to improve their taste considerably with a little bit of work. As it is often the case, deep frying is a way to go. The recipe below is one my mom uses and I have a fond memories of eating potato sticks, when I was a kid.

Ingredients

2 cups (~500 g) of mashed potatoes
1 cup of grated cheese
2 tbsp of flour
1 egg
salt, chilli or cayene pepper

Preparation

Put all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix them throughly. Do not mix them too long as mashed potatoes tend to become more sticky the longer you work them. Take a small portion of resulting mass and roll it on a cutting board to form a long “snake”. Cut it into 5-7 cm chunks and deep fry for 2-3 min. Flip sticks on the other side and continue frying until they are deep brown.
An example of a serving – a salmon, corn on a cob and potato sticks. With ketchup or bearnaise sauce this dish is simply irresistible.

W oczekiwaniu na 4 lipca - wybory prezydenckie 2010

Polskie wybory prezydenckie 2010 roku, to jeden z najbardziej pasjonujących spektakli politycznych, jakie mogliśmy obserwować przez ponad 20 lat. I to pomimo tego, że w porównaniu z innymi kampaniami wyborczymi tego dwudziestolecia w zasadzie nic ciekawego się nie dzieje. Po bliższym przyjrzeniu się zaistniałej sytuacji okazuje się jednak, że mamy do czynienia z nową jakością. W ustach zwolenników PiS i PO pojawiają się określenia takie jak: „sieroty po PO-PiS-ie”, czy „IV RP”, a politycy i środowiska sprzyjające obu tym partiom wymieniają się „uprzejmościami”. Nie należy się natomiast spodziewać jakiejś brutalności w stylu dziadka z Wehrmachtu, czy sfałszowanego oświadczenia majątkowego. Z uwagi na katastrofę smoleńską kampania została wyciszona. Posiłkując się metaforą: walki toczą się na przedpolach. Nastąpiło rozwarstwienie obrazu. Tym razem nie chodzi o to, kto jak wypadnie w debacie, czy co na jego temat wypłynie z archiwum IPN. Większą rolę odgrywa zaplecze kandydatów – cała galeria polityków, działaczy, dziennikarzy, przedstawicieli show-biznesu. Kampania „zamerykanizowała się” pod tym względem. Niedługo doczekamy się całych hord wolontariuszy, którzy zapukają do setek tysięcy drzwi, by osobiście namawiać do głosowania na przedstawicieli określonej partii. W istocie – nasza demokracja nie jest systemem idealnym, ale z pewnością jest najlepszym, na jaki nas w tej chwili stać. Ta kampania pomaga się temu systemowi rozwinąć.

Główni rywale wyborów 2010 pozostają „czyści”. Wykorzystał to Jarosław Kaczyński, który pokonując zmęczenie i smutek po tragedii, mógł pokazać swoje cieplejsze oblicze, a nawet próbować oczarować elektorat lewicy. Ubieganie się o wyborców kandydatów pokonanych w I turze, to zresztą najprostsze rozwiązanie. Sięgnięcie po głosy ponad 40% uprawnionych, którzy nie poszli do urn, kosztowałoby o wiele więcej wysiłku. Przy okazji po raz kolejny okazuje się, jak ważną rolę odgrywa pamięć. Przecież PiS, jeszcze nie tak dawno temu (w czasie ostatnich wyborów do PE) zachęcało ludzi do pozostania w domach. Taki nieładny manewr. Tak samo jak ten z postulowaniem wymazania SLD z partyjnej mapy Polski. Miejmy jednak na uwadze, że zamiast Jarosława Kaczyńskiego i Bronisława Komorowskiego walczą ich zwolennicy. W przypadku prezesa PiS jedną z jednostek bojowych jest Nasz Dziennik. I tak, lektura jednego z artykułów tej gazety (Małgorzata Rutkowska „Hiszpański scenariusz”, Nasz Dziennik, 22 czerwca 2010, Nr 143) przynosi bardzo zabawny fragment o „broni światopoglądowej” po jaką sięgnął niedawno przewodniczący SLD. Tą bronią ma być nauka u socjalistycznego premiera Hiszpanii José Luisa Rodrigueza Zapatero, którego rząd: przeforsował wyrugowanie nauki religii ze szkół publicznych, ułatwił procedurę rozwodów, zalegalizował związki homoseksualne wraz z prawem adopcji dzieci, a nawet dopuścił aborcję na życzenie. Teraz to z powodu chęci wprowadzenia takich zmian w Polsce będzie atakowana „lewica”. Chociaż myślę, że czasem wypomni się jej jeszcze „postkomunizm”.
Warto zwrócić uwagę na to, że Jarosław Kaczyński zdecydowanie wygrał I turę wśród polonii amerykańskiej (nie ma przy tym znaczenia to, że oddano tam tylko kilkadziesiąt tysięcy głosów). Niedawno w Stanach Zjednoczonych gościł Tadeusz Rydzyk i z artykułów komentujących tę wizytę można było dowiedzieć się, że opowiadał tam o Polsce biednej, wyprzedanej, bez nadziei. To są zupełnie nieprzystające do siebie rzeczywistości: ta, w której żyjemy i ta, prezentowana przez środowiska, które dla uproszczenia nazwijmy tu „prawicowymi”. Jeśli poświęci się dostatecznie dużo uwagi przeanalizowaniu legendarnej już zmiany Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, to wychwyci się właśnie ten nieprzystający do tego co obserwujemy na co dzień obraz rzeczywistości.

Jakiś czas trwała niepewność związana z rozbłysłą nagle gwiazdą Grzegorza Napieralskiego, uważanego za właściciela ważnej części wyborczych głosów. Komentatorzy polskiej sceny politycznej i dziennikarze spekulowali na temat targowania się komitetów wyborczych Komorowskiego i Kaczyńskiego o poparcie szefa SLD. Na szczęście sprawa ucichła, ale i tak podkreślę tutaj, że nie należy na takie manewry zwracać uwagi. To nie amerykański bestseller, w którym wszystko rozstrzyga się w gabinetach prezydenta, lobbystów i kongresmenów kilka miesięcy, czy nawet kilka lat przed głosowaniem. W polskiej polityce oficjalne obietnice składane przed kamerami nigdy nic nie znaczą. Nieoficjalnych raczej się nie zapisuje, więc łatwo o nich zapomnieć. Dlatego najbezpieczniej dla umawiających się jest po prostu „sprzedać stołek”. Ważniejsze dla części wyborców powinno być to, czy gracz Napieralski dorósł już do swej roli reorganizatora partii, przygotowującego ją do przełomowych wyborów parlamentarnych, w wyniku których mogłaby się ona stać „języczkiem u wagi”. Dopiero wtedy szef Sojuszu będzie mógł wytargować poparcie przez jedną z dużych partii kolejnych „lewicowych” ustaw.

Gaz łupkowy – przemilczany problem

Jakiś czas temu w mediach pojawiły się informacje, że Polska posiada ogromne złoża gazu ziemnego w postaci tzw. gazu łupkowego. Jest to krzepiąca wiadomość w świetle ciągłych problemów z rosyjskim kurkiem gazowym. W życiu istnieje jednak zasada, że nie ma nic za darmo i jak coś wygląda zbyt pięknie, żeby było prawdziwe, to takie właśnie jest.
Istnieje pewna kwestia, która wydaje się być pomijana zarówno przez dziennikarzy, jak i polityków, którzy już liczą dochody i dzielą nieistniejące zyski. Chodzi o metodę wydobywania gazu łupkowego. W artykule zamieszczonym w Polityce z 24 Maja 2010 r. znajduje się dość przejrzysty opis technologii wydobycia gazu łupkowego, jak również problemów z nią związanych.
Aby gaz mógł wydostać się ze złoża, należy wytworzyć sieć szczelin wokół odwiertu, które umożliwiają swobodny przepływ gazu uwięzionego w skale. Szczeliny powstają na skutek pompowania pod ciśnieniem płynu ułatwiającego kruszenie skały. Proces ten nazywa się hydraulicznym kruszeniem (ang. hydraulic fracturing lub hydraulic fracking). Płyn wpompowywany do złoża, to głównie woda i piasek, który ma zapobiegać zamykaniu się szczelin. Dodatkowo może on zawierać benzynę, naftę oraz inne rozpuszczalniki i związki organiczne – benzen, toluen, formaldehyd (podaję za Wikipedią).
Niestety proces kruszenia nie jest pozbawiony negatywnych konsekwencji – i właśnie one stanowią poważny argument za trzeźwym i spokojnym przyjrzeniem się bilansowi zysków i strat związanych z wydobywaniem gazu łupkowego. W USA doszło do kilku wypadków, kiedy płyn kruszący wydostał się na powierzchnię i został rozpylony w okolicy odwiertu. W dodatku zdarzały się przypadki, że płyn kruszący, jak również gaz i związki organiczne uwolnione ze złoża, przedostawały się do wody pitnej. Opisywane są przypadki wody z kranu płonącej pod wpływem zawartego w nim gazu ziemnego – polecam fragment wywiadu z reżyserem filmu „Gasland” (6 minuta, 45 sekunda).
Oczywiście należy podejść do tych opowieści ze zdrową dozą sceptycyzmu. Mieszkańcy obszarów, na których wprowadzane są nowe techniczne rozwiązania często wyolbrzymiają problemy zdrowotne lub szukają nieistniejących korelacji. Przypadki takie towarzyszyły budowie kolei („Krowy nie dają mleka.”) i linii wysokiego napięcia („Dzieci chorują na białaczkę.”), wprowadzaniu telefonów komórkowych („Nowotwory mózgu.”). Często wnikliwe badania naukowe dowodzą, że strach bywa nieuzasadniony lub że obserwowane efekty bliskie są błędowi pomiaru.
Niestety, w kwestii wydobycia gazu łupkowego sytuację komplikuje kwestia „bezpieczeństwa energetycznego”. Dotyczy to zarówno Polski, USA i – jak sądzę – wielu innych krajów. W Stanach Zjednocznych w trosce o alternatywne źródła paliw kopalnych wprowadzono program, który firmy wydobywcze stosujące kruszenie hydrauliczne zwalnia z obowiązku przestrzegania przepisów o ochronie wody pitnej. Obawiam się, że podobna sytuacja może mieć miejsce w Polsce. Nie chcę wywoływać paniki, ani nieufności wobec motywów koncernów gazowych czy rządów, ale uważam, że ewentualne odwierty powinny być ściśle monitorowane pod względem możliwego skażenia wody pitnej.
Na szczęście są powody do optymizmu – w kongresie amerykańskim powstaje nowa ustawa mająca regulować kruszenie hydrauliczne, a szum medialny w mediach amerykańskich powinien skierować uwagę naukowców na problemy zdrowotne opisywane przez mieszkańców terenów, gdzie wydobywa się gaz tą metodą.

Treason as a plot device

I have yesterday watched Battlestar Galactica episodes “The Oath” and “The Blood on the Scales”. They were two best episodes since the very first “Miniseries” - the story of original Cylon attack on the Colonies. I realized that to a large extent this was due to the fact that it deals with insubordination and treason. But to make it even more moving you cannot help but feel sympathy or at least understanding to the traitors.
The Battlestar Galactica is a show with powerful, memorable characters. Each has an agenda, personal beliefs and some dirty secret. There is a lot of filler episodes that are not so interesting but help build the story arc and highlight some issues that will spring characters to action no matter the consequences. I think that there is something incredibly wicked in creating a plot where we see characters that we care about do something abominable because they firmly believe that this is the only way to save the day. And then watch as their hopes are crushed and they see how they were fooled by unscrupulous villains.
The treason or betrayal was always something the kept me turning the pages of the book or stare at the screen with an unmatched consequence. Especially, when traitor's think they do a good thing. I was so emotionally invested in the story of BSG as I was in Vernor Vinge's “A deepness in the sky” for the similar reasons. I couldn't stop myself waiting for a resolution of story – the day of reckoning. To watch the bravery and sacrifices of people that lost everything, but had a will to carry on and ensure that the justice will prevail.
I am now preparing to run “Burning Empires” RPG again and the nature of this game makes it so easy and so tempting to use similar themes. Who nows, perhaps even create such an incredible emotional tension.
If you have not seen “BSG” - these two episodes alone are worth to watch the whole thing. As great as the series is - I think these are unmatched. If you are for some more intellectual and even more gripping story – do yourself a service and read “A deepness in the sky”

I decided to compile a short list of my favorite podcats in different categories.
So here it is, enjoy!

Science

Most of the podcasts I listen deal with science, the winner of this category is:
"Radiolab", which presents science topics in a fascinating way. It is simple, funny and engaging. This is a show made by a professional radio station so the quality is top notch. My favorite show was on Parasites (aired on 080909).
If you want to be on top of the hot science news I recommend “Nature” podcasts. They present results of cracking research published by the “Nature” journal. It is more technical than Radiolab but a must for serious science geeks.

Short stories

This is a hard category – there is a few podcasts that I absolutely love but one is closest to my heart -
Escapepod - a fantastic selection of best short science fiction stories. My favorite is Ted Chiang's “Exhalations”(episode 194).
The most funny podcast that I have to mention is “Drabblecast”. It is weird and wonderful.

History

Here the winner is Hardcore History - The ghosts of Ostfront episodes were simply amazing.

Boardgames

Well, guess what – of course I had to pick Dice Tower. Tom and his co-hosts are very knowledgeable and they put hell of a show if you are into Boardgaming hobby.

RPG games

This is hard. There are many but I like Yog-Sothoth the most. It deals with Call of Cthulhu and all the things Lovercraft and is done with zest and unmatched British humor.
I would be unjust if I did not mention other that I loved but sadly are now defunct - “Durham 3” that taught me a lot about Indie gaming and “Sons of Kryos” - a lot of good RPG advice. On the brighter note “The game master show ”seems to do a fine job. Finally, I will mention “The voice of the revolution” that presents all the weird and wonderfull Indie games.

Skepticism

This is a topic close to my heart. Popularization of science and fighting the anti-science is important and interesting subject. My beloved podcast in this category is “The skeptic guide to the universe” - made by intelligent, competent and most importantly funny crew. I love their interesting discussions on current scientific progress and controversies. They did a great reporting on a “climate gate” and their quizzes are really challenging. Listen to it even if you think you do not like science.
I have to mention here also “Skepticality” - they were one of the first podcasts I started to listen to and I still have them in a high regard.

Neal Stephenson makes you smarter

I love books by Neal Stephenson. Now, I have said it. Make no mistake - I am not objective. I have enjoyed all of them – starting from “Snowcrash”, through “Cryptonomicon”, “Baroque Cycle” and even “In the beginning there was a command line”. This book was the last drop that pushed me irrevocably on my way toward Linux and Open Source. I love his prose so much that I decided not to read “Diamond Age” so I will always have one more yarn of his to read in case of emergency. So be warned - I am a hopeless Fanboy.
I have finished reading his latest book “Anathem” - and I feel I need to share my thoughts on this wonderful book.
It is a behemoth. Counting almost 1000 pages of dense prose that deals with complicated ideas. It is certainly not as intimidating as “Baroque cycle” but one has to approach it with a healthy dose of respect. This assessment was quickly confirmed by first fifty pages of the book. It was hard and confusing. I did not give up – I am a seasoned reader of Stephenson's works, so I fully expected that a fair amount of mental work is in order. There is a heavy use of made up words and the world presented in the story is strange and exotic. Nevertheless any self respecting fan of SF should be able to go through this rather daunting beginning without too much trouble.
This work pays off. Neal Stephenson takes a reader on an incredible ride, rich in ideas dealing with philosophy, mathematics, science and history. This is what makes this book great and memorable read. Sure, I love gun blazing, fast paced stories as much as anyone else. Anathem has certainly its share of such moments but the pacing of the story is rather slow. What is important in the novel are ideas – the story and characters serve to present these ideas. And Anathem is doing this task very well.
Come to think about it – most memorable books are not necessary those with a great plot but those that left me with my jaw dropped and head buzzing. That is one thing that SF seems to be so uniquely suited for. A knowledgeable author can take our current knowledge and project it into the future trying to show how societies and humans could be influenced by technology and science. That sound fairly obvious but I have a feeling that only few authors really does it well. Think about Asimov and psychohistory - I agree, the premise was unrealistic but still it left me wondering about shaping the history and how and if dangers of the future can be averted. What about Dune? Sure the story was great, but how much time did I spend thinking about terraforming of the Dune and biology of Shai-Hulud or a question what can cause humanity to renounce thinking machines? “The Mars Trilogy” by Kim Stanley Robinson inspired me to think about alternative economies as did Bruce Sterlings “Distraction”.
I am fully convinced that “Anathem” belongs to the above mentioned category. Stephenson created within this story a framework to discuss wide array of subjects from purely scientific such as platonic world of geometrical objects, quantum theory, a nature of the Universe to more mundane – rise and fall of the civilizations and position and value of religion in the society. He was able to put a bold new spin on these subjects. Not in a form of immediately testable scientific hypotheses, for sure. I think that he delivered an approachable and fascinating treatise on some of the more wild ideas that physicists are discussing over drinks after official part of the scientific conference is over.
I will most certainly read “Anathem” again - I doubt I was able to grasp all the ideas contained in this book.
To illuminate this problem I will mention that while reading, I had a vague recollection that some of the discussions on consciousness the characters were having sonded very similar to the arguments presented in the “Emperor's new mind” by Roger Penrose. Well, as I found out after browsing “Anathem” website, Stephenson used this and many, many more books to meticulously construct his world and the story. It makes me feel deepest respect and admiration to the work that was put into creating “Anathem”. It also explains that his books are released so rarely.
I should criticize this book a bit – it is not perfect but I must add that I would not have it any other way. It is Stephenson - I like his slow, meandering style, long digression and feeling that I am learning a lot while reading.
The things that could be better are mainly characters. They well likable and interesting but not very memorable. In large part characters served to present ideas and not “human drama”. There is certainly a romance and hard choices, parts were I laughed and even when I felt like crying but there are writers that are doing this things much better than Stephenson. What he is doing best is to amaze the reader and make him think. All in all – after reading “Anathem” I felt smarter – and this is always a good sign.
And that is why I hope there will be more books by him. I will buy and read them no matter what most of the SF readers think.

Polcon 2009

Polcon to ogromna impreza. W Łodzi odbywała się po raz pierwszy, chociaż to właśnie w tym mieście 25 lat temu podjęto decyzję o organizacji corocznych zjazdów polskich miłośników fantastyki. W tym miejscu należy podziękować Politechnice Łódzkiej, która udostępniła konwentowiczom sale wykładowe „Lodexu” - pofabrycznego Budynku Trzech Wydziałów. To zresztą coś niesamowitego: zdaje się, że uczelnie techniczne są tymi, które najbardziej aktywnie wspierają różne przedsięwzięcia kulturalne (i nie tylko), w których maczają palce ich studenci. Wynika to zapewne z potrzeby uzyskiwania rankingowych punktów za kulturę i ogólny rozwój, ale motywacja jest w tym przypadku nieważna. Chyba zaczynam darzyć politechniki, a w szczególności tę łódzką, poważnym uczuciem. Może z tego jakiś związek będzie, np. na FTIMS-ie (Wydział Fizyki Technicznej, Informatyki i Matematyki Stosowanej)? Zobaczymy.
Potężna impreza, jaką okazał się być Polcon, składała się z bloku gier (w tym: LARP-y, gry planszowe i komputerowe), targów fantastyki, klubów konwentowych ze sprzyjającą długim posiedzeniom atmosferą, no i dla mnie najważniejszego - programu. Polcon bowiem to wspaniała konferencja popularyzująca wiedzę różną. Oczywiście nie jest to konferencja naukowa (z wyjątkiem paneli poświęconych Gwiezdnym Wojnom), ponieważ rzadko kiedy można zweryfikować wiedzę przekazywaną przez prelegenta. To właśnie bardziej popularyzatorstwo i przedstawianie ciekawostek. Dlaczego z wyłączeniem Gwiezdnych Wojen? Ponieważ zarówno prelegenci tego bloku, jak i ich słuchacze różnią się zwykle w opiniach, a większość z tych prelekcji to prawdziwe bitwy na wiedzę o filmach Lucasa i całym uniwersum Star Wars.
Polcon 2010 odbędzie się w Cieszynie (26-29.08.2010) i już dziś serdecznie na niego zapraszam. Mnie samej miło będzie sprawdzić, jak to miasto zmieniło się od 2004 roku, kiedy byłam tam na festiwalu Era Nowe Horyzonty.

Przejdźmy do najważniejszego, czyli programu. Blok naukowy, literacki, dziecięcy, Star Wars, główny, kultury japońskiej i komiksu, konkursowy i dwa poświęcone RPG. Sporo tego, dlatego przedstawię tylko niektóre spotkania i wykłady.

Czwartek:

„Lilith - demon, czy emancypantka, czyli o tym, co spotyka kobietę, która sama wybiera, jak i z kim” (prowadzenie: Klaudia Heintze). Tytuł jasno wskazywał, iż można spodziewać się feministycznych wyskoków. Spotkało mnie jednak miłe zaskoczenie. Wykład wzbogacił moją wiedzę na temat kulturowych innowacji chrześcijaństwa, a w szczególności katolicyzmu. Chodziło o erotyczne demony, których - jak się okazuje - było całkiem sporo. To tyle, jeśli chodzi o współczesne stanowisko niektórych postępowych księży twierdzących, że katolicyzm nigdy nie uważał seksu za zło. Ciekawa kwestia do rozmyślań przy kominku. Aha - zapomniałabym! Dla wszystkich, którzy zastanawiają się, dlaczego Bóg stworzył Adama i Ewę, a nie dwóch Adamów, czy dwie Ewy - na początku byli Lilith i Adam, potem doszła jeszcze Ewa. Całkiem nieźle, jak na początki ludzkości.
„Medycyna w świecie Gwiezdnych Wojen” (Anna Chlebicka). Bardzo dzielna prowadząca, która musiała zmagać się z nawałą pytań i sprostowań miłośników Gwiezdnych Wojen. Interesująca obserwacja - zdaje się, że większość fanów sagi Lucasa opowiada się za Ciemną Stroną Mocy. Ach, te czarne charaktery i ich emocje!

Piątek:

„Wyjątki z historii anatomopatologii” (Marcin Zaród i Joanna Filipczak). Prelegenci ze swadą przedstawiający najciekawsze momenty rozwoju patologii (początek XX wieku) polecili lekturę książki „Stulecie detektywów” Jürgena Thorwalda.
Spotkanie z Łukaszem Orbitowskim. Niesamowity człowiek! Zapraszam do lektury jego bloga (http://carpenoctem.pl/wordpress/orbitowski/). Co prawda sam autor powtarzał, że jego wpisów nie należy traktować zbyt poważnie, ale naprawdę warto tam czasem zajrzeć. Uczestnicy spotkania mieli szczęście - na sali znajdował się Maciej Parowski, więc Orbitowski opowiedział o swoich początkach (opowiadanie „Droga do modlichy”) i o tym, jak to po radzie Parowskiego wprowadził do pierwszych opowiadań wyraźny wątek fantastyczny. I tak to się zaczęło. Ciekawostka: Orbitowski jest współscenarzystą „Hardkor 44” (tytuł roboczy) Tomka Bagińskiego i zdradził, że scenariusz filmu jest już prawie gotowy. Obiecał też, że „Widma” będą gotowe przed wejściem „Hardkoru” na ekrany. Przypomnijmy - „Widma” to coś, co może spodobać się wszystkim, którzy lubią historię alternatywną. „Widma” są dużym projektem - pierwszy rozdział liczy sobie ponad sto stron, a rozdziałów ma być siedem, może osiem. Warszawa lat pięćdziesiątych, ulicami przechadzają się Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, Tadeusz Gajcy i wielu, wielu innych, których dobrze znamy z lekcji języka polskiego i historii. Powstania Warszawskiego nie było. Świat jest inny – nie wiadomo tylko, czy lepszy.
„Scenariusz. Komiks. Powieść. „Burza” 20 lat później” (Maciej Parowski) - tak właśnie się zaczęło: najpierw jako scenariusz komiksu, później nawet filmu. Po dwudziestu latach przekształciło się w powieść (zostanie wydana przez Narodowe Centrum Kultury pod koniec 2009 roku). Należy w tym miejscu wspomnieć o trwającym jeszcze konkursie NCK: „Zwrotnice czasu” (szczegóły na stronie: http://www.zwrotniceczasu.nck.pl/). Wszystko zaczęło się właśnie od „Burzy” i pewnego komandosa, który Parowskiemu opowiedział o męczącym go pomyśle: we wrześniu 1939 roku nad Polską przechodzą gwałtowne ulewy. Niemiecki Blitzkrieg grzęźnie w błocie. Polska wygrywa wojnę z Niemcami! Parowski zdradził kilka scen z powieści (są wspaniałe!). Właściwie był gotów opowiedzieć ją całą, ale niestety pilnowali go ludzie z NCK. Dość już użalania się nad sobą! Może i jest w tym czytelna dla każdego ironia, bo przecież tylko zrządzenie losu mogło wtedy Polakom pomóc, ale co tam!
„Średniowiecze: wojna i oręż” (Michał Wnuk) - bardzo przyzwoite. Bez szaleństw, ale jednak prowadził to człowiek, który udzielał się w ruchu rycerskim i wie, jak niewygodna potrafi być tarcza i że wcale nie tak łatwo zgruchotać komuś rękę czy żebra.
„Magia Kina - czyli jak Industrial Light and Magic zmieniało oblicze srebrnego ekranu” (Łukasz Grabczyński). Jak z bandy dzieci-kwiatów zrobić porządną firmę od efektów specjalnych? Trzeba poświęcić dziesięć lodówek (na eksperymentalne sprawdzenie tego, jak spadają z różnej wysokości), nabawić się nerwicy i być tolerancyjnym na używki. Lucasowi to się udało. To tak naprawdę cud, że Gwiezdne Wojny (epizod IV, V i VI) udało się zrealizować. Anegdotka: Lucas z żoną montowali wersje dubbingowe do Nowej Nadziei. Stracili poczucie czasu, a gdy w końcu zgłodnieli, wyszli z domu nie mając pojęcia, jaki jest dzień. W drodze do fast-foodu zauważyli tłum przed kinem. Żona sprawdziła, co to za premiera. Wróciła i mówi: „To Gwiezdne Wojny”. „Aha - to mój film”, odpowiedział spokojnie Lucas, po czym oboje wrócili do montowania.
„Odbicie faszyzmu w Universum Star Wars” (Tomasz Wolski). To było naprawdę przykre. Pewnie przez to, że piszę pracę magisterską o wybielaniu się Niemców w filmach (nie udało mi się udowodnić wojowniczej tezy o tym, że zakłamują historię) i dużo naczytałam się o faszyzmie i jego niemieckim wydaniu. Przykro było patrzeć na proste porównania w prezentacji w powerpoincie: zdjęcie Hitlera, obok zdjęcie Palpatine i podpis: „Obaj w drodze do władzy byli kanclerzami”. Albo: nazistowska swastyka obok symbolu Imperium, czy też oficer Imperium obok esesmana i tym podobne. Szybko się zniechęciłam i poszłam na równoległą prelekcję.
„Średniowiecze: kościół i krucjaty” (Michał Wnuk). Ciekawostka: wcześniej nie zwróciłam na to uwagi – dla Turków ciężkozbrojni rycerze z zachodniej Europy byli nowością. Wpakowali w takiego jednego z drugim kilkanaście strzał, a on dalej jechał na tym swoim dużym koniu. Z tego, że pokój boży był całkiem niezłym wynalazkiem też wcześniej nie zdawałam sobie sprawy. Niby dużo wiem o Średniowieczu, ale jednak tych różnych ciekawostek jest tyle, że całe życie można się nimi karmić.
„Jak nakręcić kulturę - wszystko o NCK” (Marek Horodniczy). Znajduję się na etapie fascynacji tą instytucją. Nie tylko dlatego, że dostałam wspaniałe plakaty promujące 70. rocznicę wybuchu wojny („First to Fight”, „Honor”, „Zaczęło się w Polsce” - niestety, hasła wymyślił IPN, tak samo, jak całe obchody. Na szczęście promuje to NCK, który – miejmy nadzieję – nie przekształci się w zajadłe monstrum przypominające Ministerstwo Prawdy Orwella. Przy okazji - przyjrzyjcie się budynkowi IPN, jak będziecie w Warszawie). Pozdrawiam Narodowe Centrum Kultury z tego miejsca. Uważam, że to wspaniała organizacja, której pracownicy wykonują kawał dobrej roboty – nie tylko dla siebie i szefa, ale też dla Polski.
„Star Wars: konkurs wiedzy o sadze filmowej”. Pozytywni wariaci! Zabiło mnie już pierwsze pytanie: „Jakie przekleństwo pada w V części sagi?”.

Poza tym można było dowiedzieć się prawdy o Robin Hoodzie i Janosiku („Nasi właśni wrogowie... publiczni”), o steampunku („Ale o co chodzi z całą tą magią wieku pary”), Diunie („Akademia Sardaukarów, czyli diunowy turniej wiedzy”), czy kinowej fantastyce naukowej („Od Meliesa do Kubricka: SF w historii kina”; tu ważna uwaga - gdyby tak usiąść i na spokojnie się zastanowić, to każdy fan mógłby coś na ten temat wykombinować. Kamienie milowe przecież znamy: tricki Meliesa i jego „Podróż na Księżyc”, potem „Metropolis” i „Aelita”, radiowa adaptacja „Wojny Światów” Wellsa dokonana przez ekipę Orsona Wellesa, po drodze „Frankenstein”, zmieniająca się pozycja naukowca, „Star Trek”, „Odyseja Kosmiczna”, „Diuna”, „Gwiezdne Wojny” i całe Kino Nowej Przygody).

Taka niby-konferencja naukowa, ale wokół krążyli Rycerze Jedi i Sithowie, hobbit, jakiś średniowieczny rycerz, a nawet elfy. Na Polconie spotkać można całe rodziny (przekrój wiekowy? Mniej więcej od dwóch do 80 lat), niegroźnych szaleńców, miłośników piosenki poetyckiej i fanów ciężkiego metalu, studentów i korpoludki. Jeszcze nigdy nie czułam się tak bezpieczna w łódzkim parku – te miecze świetlne, blastery i łuki robiły swoje. Miło i sympatycznie – ludzie pozytywni nawet po kilku głębszych. Uczestnikowi Polconu, jak i gościowi, towarzyszy pewność, że nic złego nie może go spotkać i że ten z długimi uszami, który tak strasznie przeklina, to robi to nie po to, by odstraszać, ale żeby dosadnie wyrazić swoją dezaprobatę dla wyniku rzutu kostką. I te kilkadziesiąt minut rozprawiania o tym, że rzuciło się nie ten czar co trzeba... Polcon to niepowtarzalne przeżycie.

I co, wiecie już, jakie to było przekleństwo? To z Gwiezdnych Wojen? Nie martwcie się – ja też nie wiem. Na szczęście to nie dyskwalifikuje do uczestnictwa w Polconie. Zapraszam do Cieszyna i bardzo dziękuję Łodzi! Było cudownie.

What is a right thing to do?

I have finally seen a “Watchmen” movie – an adaptation of a comic book under a same title created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Prior to that I had also a dubious pleasure of watching Inglorious Basterds created by Quentin Tarantino. I feel this way. Both Watchmen and Basterds are very intense visual experiences. Both are action movies that are more dialogue heavy than one could expect from action flicks. The first movie deals with the problem what world would be like if costumed heroes would really exists? It also deals with the main scare of the cold war epoch – the threat of nuclear annihilation. This motif is mirroring the one presented in “V for Vendetta”, a comic book that describes Nazi-like regime in the world after the nuclear apocalypse. Fortunately, this bleak possibility seems to have disappeared from our consciousness, which perhaps blunts the impact of the “Watchmen” story. In “V for Vendetta” movie adaptation the source of threat is more modern – terrorism and disproportionate response to it. In “Watchmen” the producers stayed true to the original. I think that the chief reason that I was moved by the movie was that characters were so believable. It really is a depiction of the world that could exist. The heroes we follow are not black and white characters we are used to see in this type of summer block busters. What sort of superhero murders his pregnant former lover only because he does not need her “service” anymore? Is he then really a scumbag that we should not feel any pity for? Perhaps he is a tragic figure – a patriot who was able to fulfill an American dream? What about the only “true” superhero – dr. Manhattan? His personality is a consequence of his godlike skills. Does he feel something anymore? Isn't it ironic that his existence warrants the peace, yet at the same time it increases tension between the superpowers?Is Rorschach – the self-rightous crime fighter representing the ultimate justice or just a crazy hateful man that should be stopped at any cost?
During the movie I literally felt hairs on my back rising – the scenes with dr Manhattan and Rorschach were intense. A lot of violence is depicted in the movie. I do not enjoy it particularly – that is one of my gripes with Tarantino. Nevertheless, I felt that in “Watchmen” violence was not in a focus. It served a goal – to shed more light on the characters. Interestingly, the most violent hero was also the most tragic – Rorschach. As for the others – dr Manhattan's deeds felt like acts of god or a nature. There was something primeval in the scene where he single-handedly wins Vietnam war. Manhattan is not human any more – it just causes awe and reverence.
I cannot comment much on the way the movie was shot, on quality of special effects or character portrayal by actors. I do not like to do that because I am not trained nor interested in criticizing art of movie making. I am more interested in the story and characters than in movie craftsmanship. I can just say that “Watchmen” did not seem to be particularly lacking on the technical side of things – not when compared to other blockbusters. As for actors - I could not care less who actually portrayed them but I was very impressed by both Rorschach – especially in unmasked form and dr. Manhattan. The latter mainly for an excellent depiction of an entity that is not human anymore.
I think that people that look for pure entertainment are going to be a little bit disappointed. The intrigue may be a bit hard to follow and there is a lot of talking. If you like interesting story and morally ambiguous characters you may find it really absorbing. After seeing “Watchmen” I feel very much like after “V for Vendetta” - left questioning the choices made by characters in a face of a plausible crisis.
Now let's talk a bit about the “Misspeled Bastards” - or slightly more correctly “Inglourious Basterds“. Yes, I admit I liked “Pulp Fiction” quite a lot. On the other hand, I was not to thrilled by “Kill Bill”. Well what I expected? There seems to be a rule that seeing violence against zombies and movie-type Nazis is ok. I was never to concerned with fate of German soldiers in “Dirty Dozen” or “Where eagles dare”. On the other hand “Saving private Rayan” left me with the sense of horror, depicting war in such a realistic manner. I expected that “Basterds” will go into the first category and I was not far off. There were great scenes in this movie – full of suspense, so that I felt like I was sitting on a needles. I was moved by the interrogation of French farmer by evil gestapo officer Landa. I think that scene in the bar with British agent blowing up his cover by having wrong accent was great. Then there were scenes with Basterds – a Jewish commandos. These were just plain horrible. I know that this was a movie about movies and not history but still sheer stupidity of these scenes was making me cringe. Hej - I started to feel bad about poor Germans. No small feat in a movie about evil Nazis! I cannot fathom why the director went for such a total “revenge fantasy” instead of making a more believable history? At a risk of making a serious spoiler I will say – come on! Killing Hitler in the cinema? It reminds me a first rule of well behaved time traveler - “Do not go to kill Hitler”. And another one - “The first time everyone tries”. Well in this movie nowhere there is a mention of the fact that this is an alternative history. It is more like a bedtime fantasy – “if I was a badass hero and I could kill Hitler - I would totally do that!”.
I guess that my criticism comes from the fact that I am much more into books than into movies. Perhaps the movie is a game of a postmodernist - what obscure movie are we ripping off right now? I would say then that “Shrek” did it much better and the plot was way, way over this lose connection of stupid scenes that is called a movie. Perhaps if I was American I would enjoy myself knowing that my country kick ass. Maybe if I would be a Jew I would feel some sort of katharsis. Unfortunately, I am a Pole that lived in a small village next to a monument erected in memory of dozens of peasants that were burned alive because of resistance offered by partisans to the Germans. It is hard to enjoy this sort of story knowing that in reality killing one German would mean death of many innocent persons – shot, hanged or burned. I would not like to be in a skin of a officer deciding about execution of German officer. I firmly believe that this movie would be much better if it was based in slightest on history. Contemplate this or this. I am sure that there are many more examples.

Honor Harrington for president!

I have just finished reading the fourth book in “Honorverse” series by David Weber. It is entitled “Field of Dishonor” and takes place directly in the aftermath of the “Short victorious war”. I have a special place in my heart for Harrington series. I am fully aware that it will never take a place in the SF hall of fame and Weber's creation is far below the pinnacles of Science Fiction literature such as works of William Gibson's, Neil Stephenson, Asimov, Heinlein et cetera. Yet, I feel such a sheer joy and excitement while reading about brave captain's exploits that I cannot stop myself from picking up consecutive books in the series. The whole cycle tells a story of Honor Harrington, a woman serving in Royal Manticoran Navy as a captain of space warships. She is a larger than life figure – a genius strategist, brave leader, loved by her soldiers, an honest person among scheming politicos and admirals. In a way she reminds me Paul Atreides from Frank Herbert's “Dune” - there is no way such a virtuous person could possibly exists, yet if she did people would sacrifice a lot for her – as they do in these books. She opposes villainous, colorful enemies such as Pavel Young – corrupt nobleman that disregards other humans as toys to be played with and discarded when used, as well as numerous enemies of her kingdom's archenemy – The People's Republic of Haven. The setting is rich in both political intrigue and spectacular battles, full of interesting characters and societies. It is not exactly my favorite type of science fiction – it does not deal with social consequences of technological development. It does, on the other hand, use few scientifically impossible concepts to create a believable basis for a setting and then rigorously sticks to it. So yeah, FTL works, and the drives have a weird side effect that enables return to XVIII-XIX century naval tactics to the cosmic field of battle – but this scientific impossibility is a small price to pay for such a nifty setting. It is a series that will be a pure pleasure for people interested in military, less so for the rest of people. I myself was never particularly interested in war stories but I cannot help but enjoy adventures of Harrington. As a side effect – Harrington's seems to me to be the most awesome female character I ever read about – in the “She kicks ass on the massive scale” sense of awesome, so I guess it makes me a bit less of a male chauvinistic pig with every book I read, which can only be a good thing.
If you are not afraid of high adventure in space – read David Weber!

SFFiH numer 25 - recenzja

Staram się nadrabiać zaległości w czytaniu SFFiH. Idzie mi to jak po grudzie. Na półkach piętrzą się stosy nieprzeczytanych książek, na dysku czekają rozliczne pdf-y z naukowymi pracami, z którymi powinienem był się zapoznać przed miesiącami. Do tego internet kusi ciekawymi newsami, filmami itp. Mimo wszystko od czasu do czasu sięgam na półkę po kolejny numer SFFiH, aby nacieszyć się polskimi opowiadaniami.
Ostatnio dotarłem do numeru 25 z listopada 2007. Jak tak dalej pójdzie, to na bieżąco będę czytał to czasopismo na emeryturze.
W tym numerze spodobała mi się „Infernalizacja” Piotra Patykiewicza – przynajmniej jej pierwsza część. Zapowiadało się na prawdę na niezły horror. Szkoda, że końcówka zmieniła się w dziwaczny szpiegowsko/anty-islamski paszkwil. Rozumiem, że autor chciał uzasadnić wydarzenia, jakie zaszły w wykreowanym świecie, ale powstało dziwactwo. Podobał mi się pomysł żony głównego bohatera gotującej mu piekło – ale co w tym wszystkim robiły służby specjalne? Dziwne i trochę rozczarowujące. Czytało się jednak dobrze, dawało do myślenia i pierwsza część wciągnęła mnie niepomiernie, więc z zainteresowaniem przeczytam kolejne produkcje tego autora.
„Zdarzenie na Kaiser-Re” Andrzeja Miszczaka – dobre, krótkie opowiadanie SF. Czekam na więcej.
„Stara Gwardia” Dawida Juraszka nie wzbudziła we mnie specjalnego entuzjazmu. Bardzo lubię opowiadania o Xiao Longu, z pewnością sięgnę po „Białego Tygrysa”, ale tekst o Cairenie był rozczarowujący. Może to zbyt ostro powiedziane – przeczytałem opowiadanie z zainteresowaniem, widzę potencjał na dalszy ciekawy rozwój bohatera i świata przedstawionego. To, co mnie zawiodło w tym tekście to kompletny brak realizmu dotyczący pułapek w grobowcu Cesarza, który jakoby został pochowany w nim przed tysiącami lat. Czytając tekst fantasy oczekuję, że twórca nie będzie mnie zmuszał do zawieszania niewiary ponad miarę. Zrozumiem magię, czy smoki, zrozumiem poruszające się terakotowe rzeźby – dobry pomysł do konwencji. Ale komnata ze strzałami przebijającymi się przez kamień, które następnie powracają do „magazynków” celem powtórnego wykorzystania – powiem kolokwialnie „bez jaj”. Nie chcę zrzędzić, sam nie mam się czym pochwalić, ale jako czytelnik proszę pisarza o nie utrudnianie mi cieszenia się jego skądinąd świetną twórczością.
Na konie mój ulubieniec z tego numeru - „Struktura” Wojciecha Piechoty. Dobre opowiadanie hard science fiction w stylu klasycznym – to znaczy nie „zabili go i uciekł”, ale historia o poznaniu nieznanego. Jestem biologiem, który interesuje się komputerami i wiele razy zastanawiałem się nad problemami przedstawionymi przez autora. Za takie teksty cenię gatunek science fiction. Może przydałoby się trochę przemocy i brutalności oraz głębszych interakcji pomiędzy postaciami, ale nie ma co zrzędzić – gratuluję dobrej roboty.

Origin of Species

After much struggle I have finished reading "Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin. It took me over a month to go through ~360 pages of the text. True - I read mainly while commuting but still I feel a bit ashamed that I needed so much time and effort to go through a book that started modern life science. In my defense I will say that I am much worse biologist than Darwin was - I know a lot about how a cell work, how the DNA carries out genetic information but I suck when it comes to systematics, botany or zoology. On the other hand, Darwin lacked the knowledge of genetics so his arguments regarding heredity where hard to follow - with understanding of genes things became much simpler.
I feel a deep respect to this book and the man who wrote it. Although it was dry at places and sometimes plain boring, I admire the simple well presented arguments for the theory of modification with descent, as Darwin called theory of evolution. If not for my lack of knowledge, that must have been obvious for a well educated person from that era, this book is popular science plain and simple. Much different from the way scientific works are written nowadays.
Now I need to give a try to the "The Voyage of the Beagle". Before I will do that I need some downtime - I am going to read Wolves of Calla by Stephen King.

A trip to Estonia

Recently, I have participated in a scientific conference in Estonia. It was devoted to plant abiotic stress and proved quite engaging. Additionally, I had an occasion to take a brief look at the country.
The flight from Stockholm was a real pleasure. Just 45 minutes in air and a nice view of the sea and land below. The coast of Estonia looks much smoother than its Swedish counterpart but I spotted a few islands. While on the plane, I was reading an article from Wikipedia devoted to the country. I was moved by what I learned from it. We, Poles, tend to think that history treated us badly. I think we should read up more on countries such as Estonia. They had it rough since the time of the Vikings, and it would seem that the only good times in the country history were in between World Wars and after the fall of Soviet Union. The particularly tragic part of their history took place during the soviet reign. At the beginning of WWII they were invaded by the Red Army “protecting” them from Nazi threat. This was, as in case of Poland, accompanied by disposal of politically suspicious elements – by means of mass executions and deportations. Later, when the war broke out between Soviets and Nazis, the only sensible choice was to ally with Germans, but according to Wikipedia, Estonians were quickly disillusioned with their liberators and chose to fight with the Soviets in the ranks of the Finnish army. Tragically, when Germans started to withdraw from Estonia, the government announced a mobilization, and attempted to stop the Red Army. What a desperate decision! It is easy to predict what followed this futile attempt. As a result of political incorporation and pacification of Estonia 200 000 people were killed, deported or fled the country. And Estonia had a population of only 1.5 milllion! Their fate was in a lot of ways similar to ours, but magnified by the fact of the incorporation into the Soviet Union (SU). Interestingly, communists promoted migration from SU to Estonia, especially to Tallin. This led to a current tense political situation since 40% of Tallin's population are Russians.
The ride from Tallin to Tartu, where the conference took place was quite comfortable. The land is flat as a pancake, and seems to be less populous than the typical Polish countryside. Tartu, on the other hand, looks quite familiar. It is a town with a population of 100 000 with a mixture of old, frequently beautiful, houses and new buildings. It has a big shopping mall and a nice hotel. I definitely cannot complain.

During the conference I met prof. Simon Gilroy and his wife Sarah Swanson - an American couple from the University of Wisconsin. They work on mechanical sensing in plants. I found his talk on that subject to be the most spectacular presentation of the conference, largely due to the amazing microscopy pictures and animations that he showed. The most interesting findings made by Gilroy's group regard the presence of pH gradient pulses along the length of a growing root. They also work on the signaling cascade initiated by the root hitting an obstacle. I felt almost like sitting at the cinema when watching this talk. I learned from Sarah that ATP can be used as a signaling molecule outside the cell, a fact I was not familiar with. She also recommended a book on microscopy techniques “Plant microtechniques and microscopy” by Steven E. Ruzin. I need this knowledge desperately, given my poor skills in this area.
Another interesting talk was given by prof. Teun Munnik from the Netherlands. He was talking about phosphatidylinositol 4-monophosphate (PIP) metabolism – and presented data showing that PIP3 is not a signaling molecule in plants. Plant biologists often assume that if something is valid for animal models it also holds true for plants. He presented a nice example to the contrary. This resulted in many speakers having to correct their schemes. I also enjoyed a talk by Israeli professor on the abscisic acid responsive gene (ASR1) that is actically transcribed during drought resistance and is thought to play a role in protecting the plant during this type of biotic stress. Interestingly the protein encoded by this gene is in its native state disorganized and acts as a chaperon. Zn cations facilitate rearrangements of its structure so it can bind to DNA and act as a transcription factor. During the coffee break I asked him about the role of compatible solutes. They have low molecular mass and are produced during drought. One example of such a molecule is proline. The theory is that they help in the transfer of the water to the cell during drought by lowering the water potential of the cell. The experimental data do not seem to confirm it. I was explaining to students that compatible solutes help stabilize proteins in such conditions. To my relief he confirmed it and added that in his opinion the main reason for their existence is as temporary nitrogen storage. Anyway, his presentation was a nice piece of biochemistry in an otherwise physiology heavy program.
The most important presentations for me were devoted to guard cells signaling and were given by prof. Rainer Hedrich and my boss Dr. Maria Israelsson-Nordström. I was especially keen on listening to prof. Hedrich talk. It was a well executed piece – one could easily see that he was one of the most prominent scientists at the conference. His group is working with ABA and CO2 signaling using a clever and state of the art biophysical approach. The talk was very educational although I think that he wants the biology to be simpler than it really is.
Another interesting presentation was given by a German researcher that makes mathematical models of carbohydrate fluxes in CO2-fixing cells. His group used literature data on enzyme kinetics and metabolites concentration to create models. The results showed that the model agrees well with values observed experimentally. Interestingly, they correctly predicted that starch is not decomposed when photosynthesis is active.
There were two more interesting talks – one by an indian PhD working in Czech Republic – he showed some interesting applications of chlorophyll fluorescence imaging in visualizing pathogen infection of the leaves. The second one was a talk by Dr. Seth Davis who works on circadian clock. This was the second best presentation of the whole conference.
During evening banquet I had an opportunity to talk with a professor from Netherlands - Hendrik Poorter. He is an ecophysiologist working with metadata analysis from different field experiments. He described his approach as phenomics – broad range analysis of the phenotypes. We talked about molecular biology vs. ecology, computer modeling and even Linux and Open Access publishing. Prof. Poorter told me a very entertaining story. It concerned the results of his lab experiments vs. the behavior of plants in the field. The transgenic plants were found to have high water use efficiency during experiments under controlled lab experiments. The enthusiastic researchers decided to make a final test in the field. To their utter astonishments; the control, non-modified plants had better use of water under such circumstances. How was it possible? Control plants grew faster than their water conserving GM cousins. They wasted the water - that's true. But on the later stage their well expanded leaves shaded much larger area, thus preventing water evaporation from the soil.
After the conference we went on a tour around Tartu's Old Town which I think is quite lovely and finally we had a festive dinner closing the conference. The restaurant was placed within old fortifications, the so called gunpowder cellar and was quite nice. Especially, considering that there was a live Estonian country band that played loud music at the same time as the Eurovision song contest was in full swing. Overall that was quite an enjoyable experience.

Next day we returned to Tallin and I had a chance to see the old town for few hours. Tallin reminds me of Warsaw in the sense that there is a new business part of the town with shiny skyscrapers and an Old Town. All of this among a sea of old post Soviet buildings. The Old Town is enclosed by city walls not unlike Visby. A lot of the buildings are from the XVI-XVII century and the inhabitants try to create a feel of a medieval hanseatic port. I liked this quite a bit. For me, coming from a Catholic country, it was quite an interesting experience to see protestant churches next to an orthodox cathedral. I believe that anyone that is into history would find Tallin an interesting place to visit if only for a day or two.
To summarize, I must say that it was fun to participate in the scientific conference in Estonia. I would probably be happier to see more things – For example I missed the KGB museum but it was a good experience both in scientific and sightseeing aspect of it. And most importantly, they do have Kvas in Estonia!

Gumowe Guimony – recenzja książki HELL-P

Kilka dni temu uporałem się z najnowszą książką Eugeniusza Dębskiego pt. „HELL-P”. Bez zbędnego wstępu powiem, że jestem nią zawiedziony. To nie jest dobra książka i wielka to szkoda, bo lubię i szanuję twórczość Dębskiego.
HELL-P opowiada o parze agentów służb specjalnych, którzy zajmują się walką z pomiotem Cthulhu – Guimonami. Notka na okładce zachęciła mnie do czytania, jako że jestem miłośnikiem twórczości H. P. Lovecraft'a. Niestety od samego początku w rozkoszowaniu się sprawnym rzemiosłem Dębskiego przeszkadzał mi język. Jest on przepełniony wulgaryzmami do tego stopnia, że są one niesmaczne. Nie jestem przeciwnikiem używania wulgaryzmów. Uważam, że literatura powinna odzwierciedlać sposób wyrażania się ludzi, szczególnie jeśli dotyczy czasów współczesnych. Zadaję sobie jednak pytanie, czy na prawdę agenci ABW klną jak dresy spod bloku? Tzn. w taki prostacki sposób? Przypomina mi to nieco opowiadania Andrzeja Ziemiańskiego „Toy Wars”. Tam bohaterki klęły jak szewcy. Choć one były akurat najemniczkami, więc może dobrze oddawało to sposób wyrażania się ludzi parających się tym niewdzięcznym zawodem. Jeśli jednak agent ABW jest wulgarniejszy od gościa spod budki z piwem, i to bez żadnego dobrego uzasadnienia tego faktu, to przeszkadza mi to w pełni zanurzyć się w przedstawionej historii.
Właśnie problem z zawieszeniem niewiary sprawiał mi największe trudności w docenieniu „HELL-P”. Rozumiem, że Dębski jest dumny z postaci Owena Yatesa, ale jakoś nie przypominam sobie, żeby była to postać na tyle znana, żeby bohater mógł komentować zaawansowanie technologiczne sprzętu kolegi jako godne „Owena Yatesa”. Może to mój problem, bo znam i lubię tą postać, ale takie puszczanie okiem do czytelnika drażniło mnie w trakcie czytania. „Patrz to tylko głupia historyjka, wszystko jest na niby” - zdawał się mówić autor. To trochę denerwujące.
Pomysł z Guimonami uważam za całkiem udany. Mitologia Cthulhu z pewnością stanowi interesujące źródło inspiracji. Ileż, do diaska można pisać i czytać o wampirach? Spodobała mi się inwencja autora w reinterpretacji Cthulhu, choć z drugiej strony cytowanie całej strony z opowiadania Lovecrafta to chyba lekka przesada. Mam wrażenie, że książka jest zbiorem kilku dobrych pomysłów, rozdmuchanych w sceny, które nie są połączone w zbyt przekonujący sposób. Myślę, że „HELL-P” byłby lepszy, gdyby zamiast powieści Autor napisał kilka połączonych z sobą opowiadań. Miałem wrażenie, że bohaterom zdarza się napatoczyć na interesujące wydarzenie, które nijak nie wynika z fabuły. Po prostu – w każdej lokacji czai się potwór. Autor wyjaśnia. że ilość Guimonów jest ograniczona, jednak kiedy bohaterowie idą, nie wiedzieć czemu pod ZUS, czeka tam na nich dwóch wrogów. Łącznie z innymi, które napotykają, w mniej lub bardziej przypadkowy sposób, ich liczba jest tak duża, że albo wiadomości wywiadowcze bohaterów są naprawdę kiepskie, albo ich spotkania z Guimonami są statystycznym nieprawdopodobieństwem. Wreszcie sprawa łowców Guimonów – Ekstremanów. To, że jest ich niewielu i walczą z bezlitosnym wrogiem cały czas, nie usprawiedliwia ich idiotycznego braku organizacji. Rozumiem, że Kamil Stochard – główny bohater powieści, mógł się dzięki temu wykazać pomysłowością, ale przecież można było znaleźć lepsze uzasadnienie dla dość chaotycznej metodyki działań Ekstramanów.
Interesującym aspektem tej książki jest fakt, że główny bohater jest gejem. Nie wiem, czy istnieją inni w polskiej literaturze fantastycznej, wydaje mi się, że jest to jednak ciekawy chwyt, aby przedstawić Polskę oczami kogoś, kto na pewno nie ma łatwego życia z racji swojej orientacji seksualnej. Wyjaśnia to, po części zachowanie bohatera i czyni go bardziej interesującym.
Najbardziej interesujące były dla mnie wątki niefantastyczne. Wydawało mi się, że są napisane z większą werwą. Są po prostu fajniejsze. Z przyjemnością przeczytałbym o przygodach Stocharda w zwalczaniu „zwykłej” przestępczości. Może autor zechciałby wrócić do tego bohatera i prawie rzeczywistego świata. Chciałbym jednak, żeby lepiej przemyślał fabułę książki.
Podsumowując, nie uważam czasu poświęconego na „HELL-P” za stracony. Dębski jest sprawnym rzemieślnikiem, więc książkę czyta się dobrze. Jest to, niestety, najgorszy tekst jego autorstwa, jaki dotąd czytałem. Trochę szkoda, ale nie traćmy nadziei. Mam nadzieję, że napisze kolejne książki i opowiadania i weźmie pod uwagę głosy krytyki.

Exhalation

I am a keen listener to many podcasts. I love Nature or Sc-Fri for their serious scientific content, FLOSS weekly for the possibility to look under the hood of Open Source projects. Then there are podcasts with audio stories. Today I would like to share with you a beautiful story presented in the Escape Pod. This year Hugo nominee "Exhalation" by Ted Chang is a remarkable piece of prose and the audio version narrated by Ray Sizemore is simply splendid. I feel deeply touched by the cold, slow paced narration in the form of a letter written by a scientists. I am amazed by the fact that Chang presented a story about a scientific discovery, in fact a most fundamental rule of physics in such a way that it enables the reader to wonder about a human nature. This is why I love Science Fiction. It gives me hope that Golden Age of my beloved literature did not come to pass but it continues and will bring more wonder into this world.

Great Oxidation Event explained?

The great mystery shrouding early life on Earth is that the first photosynthetic organisms able to produce oxygen – cyanobacteria evolved about 2.7 bln years ago, yet the concentration of oxygen remained low for next few hundred millions of years. Now the researchers from University of Alberta, Canada have proposed a solution for this apparent mystery. According to their model the cause may be of geological and not biological nature. They have analyzed the ratio of nickel to iron and have found that about 2.5 bln years ago there was a dramatic decrease in concentration of nickel. This element is an essential nutrient for methanogenic bacteria. The high methane concentration in the atmosphere was keeping oxygen level in check. The relatively sudden change in nickel availability caused a starvation of methanogenes and allowed the oxygen buildup, that further hindered growth of anoxygenic organisms.
The scientists propose that a primary cause behind sudden nickel decrease was cooling of Earth mantle that caused changes in composition of magma flowing out of the volcanoes in such a way that it had less nickel. This was followed by a decease in concentration of this element in the seawater and put a sudden blow (in geological terms) to the well being of the methanogenes.
The cool thing about the story is an Earth Mantle, but joking aside the fact that as a biologist I would never thing about such a far fetched thing as an influence of magma's temperature on life of some bacteria. This is awesome - good job geologists.

The Emperor's New Mind

I have recently finished a lecture of “The Emperor's new mind” by Roger Penrose. The book deals with the consciousness from the point of view of mathematician and physicist turned philosopher.
It starts by examining an idea of artificial intelligence. Is it possible to build a computer that will be intelligent? What are the criteria for deciding if such mechanism is truly intelligent? Penrose is doubting that a real SI can be constructed. The reason for this is that a computer works according to the rules of classical physics, hence is only able to follow an algorithm. The brain, on the other hand, allow as to jump to the conclusion, without following an algorithm. There are mathematical theorems whose truthfulness cannot be decided upon by following strict rules invoked by a well defined algorithm. Yet mathematicians are able to achieve this. How is it possible? What could be a source of indeterminism driving non-algorithmic operation? Penrose want's to convince a reader that the source may be hidden in quantum effects that are happening in our brain.
The rest of the book serves as a detailed explanation of this, highly controversial, position. It is interesting, yet challenging journey. Penrose starts it from a discussion of Turing machine, as a theoretical model of a classical computer, the Godel theorem then goes to fractals, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, theory of relativity and finally quantum gravity.
As I said the book was a real challenge to me. I am a wet lab biologist. I learned basic physics and math, that is needed in my work, but the complexity of the topic was mind-boggling. That being said I feel that Penrose was doing generally a good job in explaining the inherently complicated physics and mathematics needed to follow his argument. I would certainly need to re-read “The Emperor's new mind” to get a better understanding of the subject but I am quite happy that I did work my way through it. It was not easy, but I think it was well worth it. Even if I still suck at quantum physics, or all physics for that matter, at least I got a good refresh from my days as a freshman at the university. At worst, Penrose ideas can serve as a pot of tasty ideas for some good science-fiction story. If I am not mistaken, some similar concepts can be find in Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. On the other hand Vernor Vinge would probably argue with the premise of Penrose's book as it kills his Singularity idea.
I will finish by saying that I believe it is necessary to crawl out from one's professional niche once in a while and give a try to some idea from other parts of science. Even when one is getting a serious headache trying to figure out lambda calculus and multidimensional space.

Polish Sci-Fi&Fantasy

After a long break caused by writing of my PhD thesis, I can at last read books for fun. The other day I was in "Empik", which is a large media store full of really cool things, books included. I spent most of the time there contemplating two bookshelves filled with Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. One was devoted to foreign literature, mostly coming from the USA. The other one, was packed with works of polish writers. It was a pleasing view, especially when I compared the sizes of these shelves. They had similar amount of books! Now, of course USA produces astonishing amount of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so for an American this might be unremarkable, given the fact that you can make only so many translations per year.

Therefore, to explain my enthusiasm I must go back in the history. When the communism ended, Poland was drowned under waves and waves of American books. Nobody wanted to release books by Polish writers and it seemed that they would not stand a chance on such saturated market. The things have changed a lot since that times, it looks like prophets of doom were utterly wrong. I have recently read in "Science Fiction, Fantastyka & Horror" magazine that many people say that they want to read just a polish Sci-Fi & Fantasy. I think it is great. It is marvelous. When I consider the sheer number of books on the shelves I came to conclusion that even if I wold devote more time to reading I would not be able to deal with all the books and short stories produced by Polish writers.

Of course, there is a matter of quality. As with everything, I presume, there is a lot of rubbish and few precious stones. I am not saying that polish literature is better but I would frequently pick polish book over American one. I find that polish authors are very innovative and at the same time, their books ring a familiar tone. It is very different from US fiction and so Polish that I simply cannot stop enjoying it.

I have just finished reading "Lód" by Jacek Dukaj - a huge, to be sure, but gripping and beautiful book. It stands out from the crowd, not only because of its sheer size, but most of all due to its incredible story. “Lód” deals with a world where there was no World War I nor Bolshevik revolution. The Earth was struck by the Tunguska meteorite, but unlike in a real history, this event have caused the enormous changes to the world, spreading scraps of the weird metal caused tungetite across Siberia. After the explosion, a permanent winter started, covering land with ice, that slowly spreads from Siberia to european part of Russia and further into Europe. The reason for this phenomenon are most likely uncommon physical properties of tungetite. When it is struck with a hammer it cools down instead of heating up, when particles of tungetite are burnt they emits anti-light, which are called shlight. This anti-light casts spooky anti-shadows, so tungetite saturated candles are becoming an instant hit among the spiritualist crowd. To make it even more complicated ice is inhabited by a strange entities, “Lute”, which are moving assemblage of ice and matter caused by extremely low temperatures. Are Lute intelligent? Why they move toward cities? Why they seem to be able to predict the future events and appropriately modify their routes?

“Lód” is a very uncommon book. It is not something that you would read overnight. It forces you to devote your time and brain to dig in and understand the incredible concepts presented in the book. Firstly, physics within ice works differently. At first it is unintuitive and you really need to wrap your mind around its strange new concepts. Secondly, the book deals with philosophy, logic and history. There are Russian philosophers, described to the main character, while he travels to Siberia, suggesting that something is deeply wrong with their world. The ice and the new “black” physics induced by Tunguska event have “frozen” the history. This is a motif similar to that from P.K. Dick's “Man in the high Castle”.

The land covered by ice, “Winter”, is a world of pure Aristotelean logic as opposed to “Summer”, the land of constant “maybe” and unlimited possibilities, ruled by Kotarbiński's logic. In consequence, the ice changes people living in “Winter”. There is no maybe... Characters are saying the truth or lying. They are good or they are evil, without shades of gray. The catholics now with an absolute conviction that orthodoxes are heretics and vice-versa. “Lód” is also casts interesting light on Polish-Russian relationships. It is true that Poles are dreaming about death of Tsar and freedom for their country. It is also true that Russians despise Poles for their vanity. But “Lód” is not a story about good Poles and evil Russians. Quite on the contrary. It shows noble and selfless Russian military officer and traitorous polish journalists. Piłsudski, father of the nation in the real history, here is a charismatic terrorist, that seems to be no better than Tsar. I think this Poland-Russia aspect of the book was for me one of the most interesting problems discussed in “Lód”.

The last thing I have to mention is a writing style used by the author. “Lód” is written in XIX century polish, now archaic and strange, but ensuring that the reader immerses itself in the world described by the book. I firmly belive that “Lód” is an excellent example, why it would be great if more of the Eastern European Sci-Fi & Fantasy was translated to English. World does not end on the eastern side of Odra river, it just takes on different, fascinating colors.

I listened today to the newest FiB podcast. This time dr. Marc Peltier was interviewing Dr. Justin Sanchez from Department of Neurology, University of Florida. Normally I am not particularly interested in neurology but this podcast was just amazing. Dr. Sanchez works on creating an interface connecting neural system with electronical devices. This seems like an idea stright from Neuromancer - a typical cyberpunk gimmick. But it opens a new exciting ways of creating prosthetics for disabled people. In short electronical device can read neural impulses and translates it into the actions performed by a cyberarm or cyberleg or cyberwhatever! On top of that it can be use for medical telemetry, i.e remote monitoring of the patient's health.
The interview with dr. Sanchez is just briliant - a definite must listen for anyone interested in science or SF. This podcast was a nicely timed with a recent news on cybernetic monkeys. Truly, we are living in a fascinating times!

The new mars probe - Phoenix, have landed today on the surface! You can see pictures here. This is a very exciting mission. Phoenix is equipped with a state of art scientific hardware and a drill that will help in getting information about presence of water in the Mars' polar crust. I would like to recommend a very interesting podcast about Phoenix mission that was recorded few months ago on the Futures in Biotech. This is very exciting time for people interested in Mars and exploration of Space. I cannot wait for the first results!

The old professors

Recently I am reading a lot of scientific papers, which given the fact that I am writing my thesis is not remarkable in itself. The scary thing is that I started to enjoy some of them. Yes, really! The reason of this weird phenomenon is of course starvation, resulting from the lack of time to read anything more entertaining.
Additionally, it seems that I started to be a connoisseur of sorts. For any sane person scientific paper is something that you have to read in order to assimilate knowledge and get ideas for your own work, as well as see what competition is up to. That is a case with me of course, but I have also found that if you are reading some papers that have been written by the old professors they can be really entertaining (in relative terms, there are thousands of more entertaining stuff around).
I read two such papers in recent weeks and I would like to write few words about them.
First one was written by prof. N. Tolbert - one of the scientists responsible for the elucidation of so called photorespiration. This process takes place in most of the plants, where if carbon dioxide is limiting, oxygen is fixed instead. This process is frequently considered wasteful, since it leads to decrease in crop yields during hot and sunny days.
Prof. Tolbert's paper (Annu. Rev. Plant Physiol. Plant Mol. Biol. 1997) is a review devoted to photorespiration, but what makes it so interesting is that it was written from his point of view and contains a lot of personal details about him and people he was working with. It makes really huge difference from normally strict and bland scientific style. I did not learn many new things from this paper but for sure I had a lot of fun reading it and I was laughing frequently. And on top of that I found out that Prof. Tolbert is making something that philosophers of science call a bold prediction. He claims in his paper that process of photorespiration is one of the main agents responsible for the ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxde in atmosphere. In other words, the fact that we have 21% of oxygen in air results from the fact that any more than that in atmosphere containing ~300 ppm of CO2 would lead to increase of photorespiration that acts in this system as a reverse feedback, leading to increased production of CO2 and decreased oxygen evolution by plants. Now, the catch is that global rise in CO2 shifts this balance. Prof. Tollbert predicts that a new balance will be 27% oxygen! I am really interested if anyone checked if we really observe any measurable increase in oxygen concentration over last 100 years.
Another paper I was enjoying greatly was written by professor John Allen "The function of genomes in bioenergetic organelles" (2003). This one is not really that entertaining as far as writing goes, but has a paramount importance in putting my work in a wider context. Such a shame I did not read it before. I am not exaggerating when I say that I was totally hooked up on the ideas presented in the paper. To make long story short - we all have in our bodies descendants of bacteria that underwent, so called, endosymbiosis. Mitochondria, which I have in mind are the powerplants supplying energy to our cells. Plants have mitochondria as well but they also posses chloroplasts - these are endosymbiotic entities (a proper biological term is organelle) that are responsible for conversion of light energy into biologicaly available energy. The significance of these two organnelle is hard to overestimate, explaining why there is so much research (of which I am lowly participant)devoted to elucidate inner workings and regulatory mechanisms involved in this structures.
For those not knowing, I explain - mitochondria are not only producing energy, but they are also playing an important role in many diseases, of which cancer is probably the most important. The chloroplasts, on the other hand, may not be a focus of so much attention, but given the impending fuel crisis and increasing scarcity of food, it is not hard to realize how much we are dependent on plants and algae.
So know, when I explained what are these two organelle, I can explain why I consider prof. Allen paper to be such an important piece. The organelle are hiding one very puzzling secret. Why is it so that they contain their own genome? Both mitochondria and chloroplasts have DNA encoding a relatively small subset of genes. Why is it such a big deal? Well, as I have already mentioned mitochondria and chloroplasts are involved in production of energy, and this process is not without its dangers. Conversion of energy is very efficient but not perfect, leading to production of small amount of very reactive chemical entities called reactive oxygen species. They are damaging everything they come in contact with. Of course there are defense mechanisms in place but, as everything, they are not perfect. So having a DNA exposed to a source of highly damaging chemicals does not seem as a particularly good idea.
This fact is widely regarded as a curiosity that is hard to explain. Why natural selection did not take care of this?
There are several competing hypotheses:
1) Transfer of genes is still not finished.
2) Certain proteins cannot be imported (transferred from cell cytoplasm into the mitochondria/chloroplasts).
3) Some evolutionary event blocked gene transfer.
4) Few others that are modifications of the above.
5) Co-location for redox regulation (CORR) - the hypothesis that I like the most is the one presented in the Allen paper.
This hypothesis takes in the fact that there is statistical irregularity in the distribution of the organelle genes in different species. Namely, subset of genes involved in production of energy, as well as genes encoding proteins involved in the regulation of first subset are overrepresented in the organellar genome. This may mean that it is advantageous for an organism to retain certain genes due to the fact that they have to rapidly respond to changes in the environment and such localization allows them to do so in the most efficient manner.
I do not feel confident to summarize the whole paper as well as multitude of experimental research that went into forming of CORR hypothesis but I would like to explain why I think paper describing CORR is such compelling and important paper.
Allen took a great care in highlighting facts that form his hypothesis, described alternative hypotheses and presented several possible points that can lead to refutation of CORR. To me this paper is something that places my own work within a research program as understood by philosophy of science. It made me realize few important ideas that help me to deal with background and implications of my work.
I hope I showed that scientific papers can be entertaining and gripping from time to time. Thank God for old professors!

To Holmgard and beyond!

Yesterday I was, for a first time since long ago, on a metal concert. And it was awesome!
When few days back I spotted posters proclaiming that "Turisas" is coming to town I knew that this is the time to finally fulfill a dream of mine and join the fellow headbangers for an epic evening.
Turisas have been one of my favorite bands for a long time now. I have found them on last.fm, while reading about another great band "Ensiferum". As I found out, both come from Finland - I am wondering what is with this country that it breeds so many excellent bands - most of my favorite bands comes from there.
Of course I was a bit shy at first with my decision. I do not have any metal friends in Stockholm and I wouldn't like to drag my wife to the concert, knowing that she would not enjoy this at all. Well, world belong to the courageous, or so they say, so I bought a ticket and headed to Klubben hoping that I want be consumed by flesh eating satanic norwegian Loki worshiping pagans.
I was quickly calmed and even a little bit disappointed by the fact that all people seemed to be quite normal. On top of that, I was actually feeling more at home than anywhere in Stockholm. All foreigners are quick in observing that Stockholmers are clothing themselves a tad bit eccentric.
Well people outside the Klubben with a few exceptions were all clothed in black, sporting metal themed t-shirts. I felt like I was in Krakow in "Rotunda", more than in Stockholm. Nice.
So after waiting for 30 minutes concert started with a support band called "Månegarm". I will just say that it was a serious down to earth guitar shredding and cookie monster singing. In other words serious business. Of course I was stunned in a short time, and be saying stunned I mean in literal sense deafened by a wall of sound and hellish growls. I guess orcs of Mordor would be proud of this guys. That being said, after the third song I have started to really enjoy their performance. Maybe that is way death metal bands can survive? I can hardly imagine how I could listen to that music at home, but at the concert they were fantastic!
So finally there was a time for a serious ear-drum kicking by "Turisas". They jumped on the stage, clothed in furs and hides with faces painted in red and black. If that is how Vikings looked when they were descending from their boats to put towns and villages to fire and sword, I can imagine the fear their victims must have felt.
I know that most peoples would consider this funny and stupid. I say to hell with you. I enjoyed this theatrical costumes and a play they were making on the stage. This really added a nice touch to the story of Varangians.

Fuck the guitar Solos!

So know I will tell you why I like "Turisas" and metal so much. It is because of whole experience around this music. It is, in my opinion, unlike any other kind of music I know. Metal, at least the one I am listening to, is inspired by fantasy, sci-fi and often, as in case of Turisas history. It is not concerned too much with contemporary problems and I am fine with that. It tells the stories of heroes and villains, of battles and horrors. The music is usually very energetic and convey, at last for me, strong emotions. And that is what I love about it.
The Turisas concert was promoting their new album "The Varngian Way". The album tells the story of vikings going to Novogrod (Helmgard) and further down south until the gates of Byzantium. It has everything I expect from such a work. There are battle songs, crazy "party" song "In the court of Jarrisleif" and last but not list epic "Miklagard overture". I enjoyed it immensely while listening on my media player and I enjoyed it even more on concert. That is true that my eardrums would be pierced to pieces if I were not protecting them, but I think it was an amaaizing experience to scream and wave my hands and applaud the band. And I couldn't not to do this. I may be overextatic about the whole thing but it seems to me that guys and a gal from "Turisas" were having as much fun as the public. It was a great evening and I am happy I was there.

Beigles

The fact that I do not know how you spell it in English does not prohibit me from enjoying them immensely. I remember eating them almost every day when I was studying in Krakow. You know, sort of a easily affordable student fast food. I have checked, and according to Wikipedia we have, in Poland, three closely related buns that are produced from yeast dough, which is boiled for a short period of time before baking. Wikipedia is not very specific what are differences but notes that many make a mistake of naming them improperly.
Well, I do not really care, as in my quest to become a perfect house hen I achived another important landmark - I have learned how to bake beigles!
All credit goes to author of this website, I am just translating and adding some useless remarks. Well, maybe I am too hard on myself. I have found two recopies and remarks contain synthesis of what I think is best.

Ingredients:

Dough:

1 1/2 cup of lukewarm water
4 cups of flour (I am mixing all-purpose flour with some full-grain or rye flour)
30 g of yeast
1 tablespoon of sugar

Additionally:

3 tablespoons of baking soda/2l of water
1 egg
Sesame, poppy seeds, thick sea-salt
Some paper towels and a brush.
Preheat the oven to 250 C.

Preparation:
Mix all dough ingredients in a bowl. Dough should be soft but not sticky. Leave for approximately one hour, cover bowl with a cloth or something similar, so the dough won't dry.
Divide the dough into 12 pieces, make balls and make a hole in the center with your finger. Leave them on the table for 30 min.
Boil water in the pot, add baking soda (I am a bit uncomfortable about this. I have decreased the amount to 2 spoons, but I guess you can skip it altogether).
Boil the beigles, one by one for few seconds (according to second recipe it should be 1,5 min and I was boiling for that long). Flip them, while they are inside the pot so both sides are in contact with water. Dry them on paper towel and put on the baking plate covered with baking paper.
Use a brush to cover upper side of beigles with scrambled egg and apply topping to your taste. This is a good part. I love sesame and I remember being always convinced that street vendors reap me by selling me the ones with least amount of sesame. As you can guess, due to this traumatizing experience I am quite generous with the topping. Better yet, why not mix poppy seed, sesame and salt!?
After you sprinkle your beauties with topping brush some more egg, so the topping will be firmly fixed.
Now you are good to go, except one additional trick - I am using it as well for baguettes so the skin is more crisp - sprinkle some water in the oven so you have some steam inside before you put your beigles inside. Bake until they are brownish, it should be around 15 min.
Remember, if you eat them while hot you tummy can hurt so try to be patient!

Linux, Wine and Games

I remember my first attempts at use linux. I made a resolute decision not to give up but it was hard. Time and time again I needed to boot windows to use this or that program. I found linux to be exotic and tempting but frustrating at the same time. I remember that there was a little hope under the name of WINE - a program that allows running windows programs under linux. I spend hours trying to get anything to run. Mostly without success. Slowly I gave up, using and finding more and more open source applications. After over three years of using Ubuntu on the daily basis, both at home and at work, I found that there is just one thing I need Windows - games. That being said, I am not playing nowadays so much. Every now and then I decide to waste some time playing some strategy or RPG, only to find out that I am bored quickly and return to linux to to some other stuff. Of course having Playstation 2 is also a factor diminishing my need to use Windows.
I will describe wider how one can entertain himself using linux and floss some other time. Now I will stay on the topic of games. Recently I decided to give a try to WINE one more time, not because I needed to. Simply because I was bored.
WINE is slowly getting closer to version 1.0 and I can just say - it shows. I was able to run "Baldurs Gate" without a hitch, a feat in itself if you consider that running it under XP is not that straightforward. Later I found out that games from the series of "Age of Wonders" are working as well. Looking at the application database I found out that many others works as well - I was concentrating on strategies mainly - HoMM3, Europa Universalis 2, Starcaft, Worcraft III and many others are functioning quite well. I have a doubtful privilege of having very weak graphic card so most of the 3d games are out of my reach, but I know that you can play Call of Duty, Half Life II, Counter Strike not to mention Unreal and different Quakes.
To sum up - I would need a lot of time to finish good games that one can play using linux and WINE.
If you add to this mix native, open source games, such as Freeciv or Wesnoth, it is really hard to complain. Happy gaming!

The dawn of the civilization

Recently I have been listening to the 19th episode of the excellent podcast "Game's the Thing" devoted to Reiner Knizia's tile laying games. My attention have been drawn to one game in particular, the "Tigris and Euphrates". I have read about this game before, but the theme wasn't sounding very exciting so I didn't care too much. I was so wrong. Fortunately Ron and his buddies have changed my mind and after a short consultation with my wife, we have decided to invest our money in the game on the account of Easter Bunny present.
The box looked quite solid, so were the insides. I wasn't put off by the manual too much, having been read that the game is on the hard side of things. Now we needed only a chance to play.
Finally we got an opportunity on the Great Saturday. We played with our friend, Tomas. I was the most well read in the ways of T&E having read manual two times, and playing once against the computer in the java version of the game. I have to say that I was expecting to crush my opponents and scatter them to the wind under the wheels of my mighty chariots. I was wrong...

The game started surprisingly quickly, a picture above shows result after, I think, third round. I wanted to illustrate some rule, so I did some stupid move, when my wife, who were claiming she does not understand the game launched a sneak attack and won first war against me.
From here it was downhill and my ambitions were smashed in blood of my minions. Tomas and my evil wife divided the map among themselves and I was like a fifth wheel. I had my moments of glory, thats true. The incredible thing about the game was that, as we played the complexity and strategical possibilities were unraveling in front of us. T&E does not seem like an easy game. Rules are not that complicated, really but after playing I can say that there is plenty of meat to sink your teeth in.
At some point, when everyone was entrenched behaind a wall of temples we found out about catastrophe tiles. I am telling you that was a true nuclear exchange, within two turns there was a lot of gaps in the map.

All in all game was closing to the finish, becoming more and more tense. The devilish rule stating that winner is a person who has the most points in his weakest sphere (farming, settlements, farms and temples) was really getting my blood flowing.
Finally, in the last turn Tomas decided to join two gigantic kingdoms into one, initiating three external wars. He won two against my wife, who in turn took revenge on me, scoring 13 points in one engagement! As a result kingdom was broken into six small fiefdoms! I guess this nicely illustrates the pacifists' point of view.
Then it was a point to reveal who is the winner. I was out having only 13 points in my weakest sphere. We were convinced that Tomas will win, after scoring so many points in the war.
Of course Gosia was the winner. She just has this talent, you know.
All in all, that was a great game and I am really looking forward to repeat this experience.

Runebound massacre

Another weekend, another game. This week we have been playing "Runebound" - an adventure game form Fantasy flight games, in which players are taking upon themselves roles of brave heroes that try to stop the mighty Dragon Lords from destroying a land of Terrinoth.
As usual, Runebound took us enormous amount of time. We played it with three players, one new to the game, and it took us over 4 h. to finish it. Not your typical party game...
It was quite a fun - killing monsters, collecting money and buing stuff. Diablo of a bordgames, really.
We played with three female characters - an assassin, a runewitch and last, but not least, Red Scorpion, a character with equal skills in each attribute and five hit points, as opposed to four for other players. The only downside of the Red Scorpion, also known as Sister Tittie, was relatively low damage value. The fact that we had only female characters and my wife and our friend Ania have a frivolous sense of humor led to some shockingly bad jokes about methods of enemie distraction...

The game started bad for Ania, whose character was knocked-out three times during the game , due to the bad rolls, causing her to be relatively weaker than our characters.
Unfortunately I feel like a worst munchkin after the game. I have created a monster. I have seen this before, when playing with our other friend. He whipped our backsides terribly creating very powerful combination of magical artifacts.
So did I. Not only I had a really good rolls, but I had also collected some really nifty stuff. One I really liked was a Fetching Imp - a familiar allowing me to buy and sell things without visiting the cities. Few well aimed bombs were also quite useful. Funny thing is that I did not had any very strong weapon, except Soul Rune at the end of the game. I have advanced so quickly, that by the end of the game I had 12 in all skills, meaning that I was automatically hitting most of the yellow challenges. Truth, I had one attack per turn with only two attacks, and I did not posses any "Before Combat" artifacts, but allies filled gaps pretty nicely. I must stress that point - allies are critical. For example I had an Accolyte of the Flame - the useless ally worth one gold coin. But he could soak a damage, and near the end of the game he was able to survive two turns against some terribly powerful dragon and even hurt him a little! I admit that was a sheer luck, but still it is better than facing such a creature alone.
So I won. Not very sporty of me, but it happens. And I am rather glad.

Kilka miesięcy temu zainteresowałem się elektroniką. Zastanawiam się jak do tego doszło. Właściwie dość już mam różnych hobby, żeby pakować się w kolejne. Z drugiej strony nie lubię uczucia, że czegoś nie wiem. Niektórym to przeszkadza, ale mnie świadomość, że tak ważny dział współczesnej techniki pozostaje dla mnie niezrozumiały, irytuje mnie niepomiernie. Nie jestem inżynierem i przyznaję, że matematyka i fizyka zawsze sprawiały mi problemy. Na szczęście szkoła/studia się skończyły i nie muszę się martwić, że dostanę pałę, albo zepsuję sobie średnią. Teraz sam wybieram, czego chcę się uczyć.

Kolejnym powodem są moje zainteresowania zawodowe. Jako biolog zajmuję się sygnalizacją komórkową - mechanizmami odpowiedzialnymi za regulację procesów komórkowych na wydarzenia zachodzące w środowisku, a także wynikające ze statusu komórki i programu rozwojowego. Ta dziedzina biologii molekularnej zawsze mnie fascynowała i, choć jest niezwykle trudna, to trudno mi sobie wyobrazić bym zajmował się czymś innym w biologii. Oczywiście, choć "wetware" - białka i niskocząsteczkowe substancje sygnałowe to dziedzina odległa od elektroniki, ale nietrudno dostrzec podobieństwa. Im dłużej studiuję tą dziedzinę, tym bardziej dochodzę do wniosku, że poznanie elektroniki, pomoże mi w lepszym zrozumieniu sygnalizacji komórkowej.
W komórce ma miejsce recepcja sygnału (sensory), amplifikacja (kinazy), integracja sygnału (crosstalking), sprzężenie zwrotne itd. Pamiętam że kiedyś czytałem pracę naukową, w której autorzy rozrysowywali szlaki sygnałowe rysując bramki logiczne. Wydaje mi się, że czas poświęcony na nauczenie się podstaw elektroniki, nie będzie czasem straconym.
Nie muszę chyba przekonywać nikogo, że internet jest wspaniałym źródłem wiedzy, także o elektronice. Do tego komponenty są raczej tanie. Nic, tylko brać się do roboty...

Puerto Rico

Wczoraj rozegraliśmy z naszymi znajomymi, Jenną i Tomasem, partyjkę "Puerto Rico". Panie rozgromiły nas bez trudu uzyskując 43 (Jenna) i 42 punkty (Gosia) Ja, pomimo, że jak zwykle miałem doskonały plan, skończyłem grę zajmując chlubne ostatnie miejsce. Do diaska!
Porażka nie stępiła mojego entuzjazmu do tej gry, wręcz przeciwnie. "Puerto Rico" jest najciekawszą grą planszową w jaką miałem okazję grać. Zasady sprawiają, że każda decyzja jest trudna. Wszystkie elementy są istotne. Cóż z tego, że masz budynki, jeśli nie ma w nich kto pracować? Co z tego, że masz dużo towarów, jeżeli konkurenci załadowali statki i nie ma miejsca na twój towar? Masz magazyn? Nie? To tracisz towar... Czy Hacjenda to przydatny budynek? A może lepiej zainwestować w Mały targ?

"Puerto Rico" bez wątpienia zasługuje na pierwsze miejsce na Boardgamegeek, dróg do zwycięstwa jest wiele, jest w co się wgryźć. Jak sądzę, "Puerto Rico" będzie jedną z tych gier do których będziemy wracać często. I tylko szkoda, że mamy tak mało okazji by w nią grać.

P.S. Wolf wprowadził sie do naszego mieszkania. Jeszcze się boi, ale powoli eksploruje kolejne pomieszczenia.

Czekając na Wolfcia...

Razem z żoną wybraliśmy się w zeszłym tygodniu do schroniska dla kotów. Od razu zakochaliśmy sie w ośmiomiesięcznym rudym kotku - Wolfie. Musiał mu się przydarzyć jakiś straszny wypadek albo okropny właściciel bo Wolf ma na głowie paskudną ranę - dziurę w czaszce, na szczęście rana się zagoiła, ale kotek jest bardzo nieśmiały i ucieka od ludzi. Odwiedziliśmy go ponownie w niedzielę i spędziliśmy z nim ponad dwie godziny, co wyraźnie pomogło skruszyć lody. Początkowo nieśmiały, Wolfciu przeobraził się w rozbrykanego urwisa, szczególnie wobec naszego odkrycia, że patyczek z pluszową pandą na sznureczku wydaje głośne szeleszczenie kiedy go potrzeć o palik do ostrzenia pazurków. Kot nie mógł puścić tego płazem pluszowej pandzie i z wielkim entuzjazmem rzucił się do karania jej za niegrzeczne zachowanie. Wreszcie Wolfciu zmęczył się i udał się na spoczynek do swojej starszej koleżanki Huldy. Tutaj dał się wreszcie pogłaskać i, co więcej, zaczął mruczeć, bardzo nas tym uszczęśliwiając. Teraz czekamy tylko na wizytę pań ze schroniska, które zadecydują, czy możemy zabrać Wolfa do domu.
Zapraszam do oglądania zdjęć z naszej wizyty, z góry uprzedzam, że jakość jest słaba, ale złapanie kota w ruchu jest niemalże niewykonalne.

Czytając BoingBoing.net, natknąłem się na link do opowiadania Neila Gaimana pt. "Study in Emerald", w wersji audiobooka, w wykonaniu samego autora! Gaiman czyta swe opowiadanie niczym zawodowy aktor - początki rozdziałów to krótkie reklamy z czasów wiktoriańskich, czytane z właściwą im egzaltacją, królowa Victoria mówi z niemieckim akcentem, a inspektor Lestrad brzmi jak typowy policjant. Słowem, słuchając Gaimana można poczuć się niczym 19-wieczny mieszkaniec Londynu.

Co więcej samo opowiadanie jest cudowne! Porywające i niesamowite niczym reszta utworów Gaimana w dodatku z niesamowitą wizją historii i śmiałą interpretacją na temat Sherlocka Holmesa. Zachęcam serdecznie do słuchania! Plik można pobrać stąd.

Dzisiaj rozegraliśmy ze znajomymi fantastyczną partię "Scrabbli". Z dumą przyznaję się do zwycięstwa, z wynikiem 173 punktów! Osobiście uważam jednak, że najlepsza była żona, która ułożyła słowo "SZARP" za potrójną premię słowną, a następnie przedłużyła je do słowa "SZARPANE" uzyskując kolejną potrójną premię. Chytre indywiduum...
Daleko nam do mistrzów Scrabbli, ale jak na niezobowiązującą grę całkiem nieźle. Na dodatek układ stworzony przez naszą czwórkę był niezwykle ładny, więc zrobiliśmy zdjęcie. A właściwie spróbowaliśmy zrobić, bo wyszło fatalnie. Trochę retuszu poprawiło sytuację, ale nieznacznie.
Tak czy inaczej - miły niedzielny wieczór.

Właśnie skończyłem słuchać podcastu „Futures in Biotech” ze strony TWIT, w którym występował dr Buzz Aldrin, znany wszystkim członek załogi Apollo 11, który jako drugi, po Neilu Armstrongu, człowiek stanął na powierzchni srebrnego globu. Nie wiem, jak to się stało, że w poświęconej biologii audycji wystąpił były astronauta, ale to kolejny powód, dla którego uważam, że podkasty to wspaniałe medium dla ludzi zainteresowanych nauką i techniką, zawsze można trafić na perełkę..

Wracając jednak do Adrina. Słuchanie, tego ponad siedemdziesięcioletniego inżyniera, pilota wojskowego i astronauty to wspaniałe uczucie. Niesamowita wiedza człowieka, który na wylot zna jedno z największych dokonań ludzkości, robi przygniatające wrażenie. Przyznam, że trzeba się orientować nieco w eksploracji kosmosu i historii tejże, bo Aldrin nie stroni od szczegółów technicznych, ale myślę, że naprawdę warto wysilić trochę swe szare komórki. Myślę, że to kolejna zaleta podkastów. Występujący w nich ludzie nie muszą upraszczać nadmiernie prezentowanych zagadnień, aby wcale trafić do szerokiego grona odbiorców, mogą sobie pozwolić na większą szczegółowość i wgryźć się w temat.

Aldrin duży nacisk kładzie na czas trwania misji. Astronauci powinni spędzić na powierzchnii planety 5-7 lat, żeby misja miała sens. Stanowi to oczywiście gigantyczne wyzwanie, ale potrzeba nam takich śmiałych wizji. A wobec tak ekscytujących wiadomości, jak znalezienie prawdopodobnie aktywnego, młodego lodowca na powierzchni Czerwonej Planety, trudno zachować kamienny spokój.

Spotykam się z wieloma argumentami przeciw eksploracji kosmosu, postać Aldrina przekonuje mnie jednak, że nie powinniśmy się poddawać. Jedną z dwóch rzeczy, które lubię w Szwecji najbardziej, są cynamonowe bułeczki drożdżowe - „Kanelbullar”. Ich wykonanie jest niesamowicie proste i stało się moim pierwszym krokiem w dziedzinie ciasta drożdżowego. Przygotowanie kanellbullarów nie zabiera wiele czasu, a zapach z piekarnika jest niepowtarzalny. Przepis wziąłem z tej strony .

1 Składniki

Ciasto:

2,5 deg drożdży
7,5 deg margaryny
250 ml mleka
50 ml cukru
szczypta soli
łyżeczka mielonego kardamonu
750 ml mąki

Masa:

5 deg margaryny
50 ml cukru
łyżeczka mielonego cynamonu

Glazura:

1 jajko
cukier perłowy

2 Przygotowanie

Rozbij drożdże na grudki w misce, wlej mieszaninę mleka i rozpuszczonej margaryny o temp. 37 ºC.
Dodaj cukru, soli i kardamonu, wymieszaj.
Następnie dodawaj mąki, mieszając rękami, puki ciasto nie stanie się gęste i nie zacznie odchodzić od rąk. W razie potrzeby dodaj więcej mąki, niż podano w przepisie.
Odstaw na 30 min, najlepiej w ciepłe miejsce.
Przygotuj masę: Pokrój margarynę na małe kawałki, dodaj cynamon i cukier i rękami ucieraj na masę. Jest to najbardziej istotna część całej procedury. Z początku rozpuszczaliśmy margarynę, ale wówczas wypełnienie nie jest takie dobre.
Po 30 min wyjmij ciasto na stolnicę, albo blat stołu. Wysyp powierzchnię niewielką ilością mąki. Rozwałkuj ciasto, jak na pizzę, ale nie zbyt cienko.
Używając płaskiej łyżki rozprowadź masę na powierzchni ciasta. Masa jest dość twarda, więc uważaj, aby nie podziurawić ciasta.
Zwiń ciasto w ciasny rulon, jak makowiec, obetnij końce, gdzie nie ma wypełnienia i odłóż je na bok. Pokrój rulon na 2-3 cm plastry i ułóż je na uprzednio pokrytą papierem lub folią aluminiową, blachę. Aby wypełnienie nie wypływało na dno, mam zwyczaj wpychania wystającego na zewnątrz paska ciasta drożdżowego pod spód. Powszechność symbiozy w ekosystemach jest faktem, z którego nawet biolodzy nie zdają sobie do końca sprawy. Książka Lynn Margulis jest entuzjastycznym peanem na cześć symbiozy, która jest nie tylko niezbędnym elementem życia na ziemi, ale również istotnym czynnikiem kształtującym ewolucję życia na Ziemi.

„Symbiotyczna planeta” jest interesująca również jako materiał dla filozofa nauki. Autorka książki, jest, według mnie, na czele naukowej rewolucji grożącej staremu paradygmatowi. Teoria ewolucji jako akumulacji mutacji prowadzących w konsekwencji do tworzenia nowych form życia cierpi z powodu nieustannych ataków fundamentalistów chrześcijańskich, którzy pod pozorem naukowości próbują zaprzeczać i dyskwalifikować ewolucję jako fakt naukowy. Według autorki życie na Ziemi jest bezpieczne. Ludzkość, zadufana w sobie, jest zbyt słaba, żeby mu zaszkodzić. Czy jednak jesteśmy w stanie obronić się przed samymi sobą jest całkiem inną kwestą. Za najlepszą ilustrację niech posłuży ten oto cytat: „Słyszę docierające ze wszystkich stron głosy obrońców naszych braci mniejszych – Dałem sobie świetnie radę zanim cię spotkałem, dam sobie radzę i teraz”.
Muszę powiedzieć, że jest to dla mnie książka porównywalna ze słynnym "Samolubnym Genem", który sprawił, że biologia stała się dla mnie nauką fascynującą i na nowo rozpaliła we mnie pasję. Czuję się podobnie teraz, po przeczytaniu dzieła prof. Margulis. "Symbiotyczna Planeta" wychodzi poza obecne horyzonty nauki, rysuje nowe mapy nauki i inspiruje do spojrzenia na dotychczasowe dogmaty w sposób bardziej krytyczny. Margulis podejść z dozą sceptycyzmu. Wszak łatwo zbłądzić na niezbadanym terytorium. Z drugiej strony odważni odkrywcy, nierzadko ryzykując kpiny i
utratę reputacji, nie raz udowadniają, że nasze zrozumienie świata jest niepełne,
i tworzą lepsze modele rzeczywistości. Chciałbym gorąco polecić "Symbiotyczną Planetę" zarówno biologom, jak również zwykłym ludziom, którzy interesują się
nauką. Jest to porywająca książka, stanowiąca fascynujący obraz pasji naukowej
oraz ilustrująca w doskonały sposób jak funkcjonuje nauka. Serdecznie polecam.
